Burnout Big Surf Island DLC detailed

Criterion has posted an update about the upcoming Burnout Paradise DLC, Big Surf Island. As you may have guessed, the DLC adds an entirely new island to the world of Burnout Paradise and it features lots of new locations and things to do. For example, you can drive all the way to the top of the cylindrcal tower in the image above. Big Surf Island also hosts a construction yard which is filled with scaffolds and lots of jumps. Criterion also announced that a new vehicle will be released at the same time as Big Surf Island, a dune buggy called the Dust Storm. You can see several locations from Big Surf Island as well as the Dust Storm in the gallery below.
While a specific release date hasn't been announced -- sounds like early next year -- Criterion did announce that Big Surf Island will be premium content, though a specific price has not been revealed.

How dare they charge for this? I kid, I kid. I sold my Burnout Paradise quite a while ago. I have missed out on a lot of FREE content and this new update would surely be worth the space bux. Thank You Criterion for supporting all of the people that play and enjoy your games.

um, ok, it was cool when the game first came out, but all of the free dlc I got was crap, and this seems like its a little late. they should have just put this out a while back and included the free shit instead of trying to make it look like they are doing all of this great and wonderful stuff.
I got rid of my copy last week after holding off and waiting for this island. Now Ill just play midnight club LA.

Well, Big Filth, I couldn't disagree more. A company that offers THIS much content nearly a YEAR after the release of a game is to be commended.
The free DLC they've provided over the last few months is decidedly *not* crap, and this expansion should prove to be well worth what they're charging.
I did not buy this game on release--I bought it months later, partly because of all the support Criterion was giving it to increase its lifespan. I don't regret my purchase in the least. It's games like this (and, to a lesser extent, Ace Combat), that should be the model for publishers who want to keep their games relevant in the face of competition.
Obviously, you're welcome to your opinion, and if you prefer Midnight Club, that's great. To me, the two games are like apples and oranges as far as experience and fun factor. I'll stick with Burnout--at least until Test Drive Unlimited 2 comes out ;)

honestly, considering the quantity and quality of the free DLC they've been releasing, I don't really have a problem with buying some premium DLC for this game. They've supported this game incredibly well over the past year, and I suspect we'll see DLC (both paid and free) for at least another year. Seems like a solid business strategy, and a good thing for gamers.... in short, win, win, win situation.

I initially refused Paradise since I did not like the lack of a "start race over" button and the new crash mode. However, once I saw all this new content I went out and purchased it for around $30. What a great deal that was. I'm very pleased with their continued support of the game and for sure will be buying the new content when it comes out. To me it's a great way to keep your sales up beyond the initial release.

I purchased it thru Gamefly for 15 bucks. Figured what the hell. I will be buying this DLC. They have supported this game extremely well. I will support them.

I played the demo of Burnout Paradise, and it didn't really interest me. Though I have gained a lot of respect for Criterion with all of the free content, and great support they have given this title. Like Doug said, this game should be the model for publishers who want to keep their games relevant in the face of competition.

I had the demo, played that for hours and hours, more than many $60 full games. I bought the game at release, and I thought it was a truly awesome game. I was one of the first people to register on their forums and was an active participant until the community got so big that I didn't know people there anymore. Criterion is to be commended for making such a kick-ass game and continuing to support it for this long - I definitely got my money's worth, and if you haven't played this yet, you should check it out - it's a classic.
That said, eventually after playing it for literally hundreds of hours I got bored and I moved on. I don't think I'll be plunking down for DLC for a game that I got bored with, for really something like 30 minutes of play before I tire of it simply because I've overplayed the game mechanics. But I have no doubt that it will be well worth it for someone who plays this regularly now, and if it had been released a couple months ago when I was playing this religiously Criterion would've gotten my money EASILY.

I'll be buying it for sure. I have played so much burnout and it has all been good. The fact that they are still releasing such content so far after initial release is just awesome.
Criterion should be commended and put on a pedestal for all other companies to see as the correct way to do DLC. They have done an awesome job.

I have loved the Burnout series since the very first game and Criterion is really going all out for their supporters now. A year after they released Paradise, they are offering an entire brand new island for what will probably end up being $8. Instead they could have done what the NFS developers do and release a new game or two a year that only have a different storyline and maybe a new car or two. Seeing as Burnout Paradise has absolutely no storyline at all, this is just an awesome thing for Criterion to do.
