Video proof of Jaspers with 256MB internal memory
X3F tipster Stuart has sent us some more photo evidence that new Xbox 360 units are shipping with 256MB of internal memory. Stuart recently purchased a new Xbox 360 Arcade unit to replace a broken unit when he noticed that it didn't include a 256MB Memory Unit as they have in the past.
Having hooked up his old 512MB Memory Unit and his old hard drive, he noticed that another storage option was listed on his Xbox. As you can see in the image above, there are storage options for the hard drive, the memory unit, and a third option titled MU. The third option lists 214MB of usable space, which is in line with what we reported over the weekend. It also appears that this unit contains a Jasper chipset, as our tipster claims it came with a 150W power adapter (one of the supposed marks of a Jasper unit). [Update: Looks like it's actually a 175W power supply]
As if that wasn't enough, YouTube user BRB100779 has posted a video showing off the same memory screen and has gone to exhaustive links to prove that the image on the screen is legitimate. Find the video after the break.
We've contacted Microsoft for comment and will update this post when we receive more information.

the white disk tray makes the 360 look very sterile.
Mazrael @ Dec 1st 2008 3:31PM
agreed... I could never go core/arcade.. looks stripped down.. if my Elite ever needed replacing, it would need to be elite, I can't go back to the off white colour.. a non chrome tray is just wrong..
Curtis @ Dec 1st 2008 4:35PM
I was looking at it and I couldn't figure out what seemed off about it. I forgot the "Core" SKU's didn't have the silver/platinum/aluminum/whatever style drives.
IanC @ Dec 1st 2008 6:00PM
Personally i hate the fake metal look disc drive.
bboston7 @ Dec 1st 2008 8:08PM
You could always mod it!
PARANOID365 @ Dec 1st 2008 10:26PM
I totally agree with the rest of you on this, the plain white 360 disk tray cover is so blah!! Since I have an elite I never really noticed that before, but I can guarantee if I ever need a new 360, or even a 2nd 360, it won't be an arcade because I really hate that look.
JAmerican @ Dec 6th 2008 1:13PM
I bought a CORE off ebay and got the pro disk tray cover (shiny one). My console looks pro now. LOL!
myabsolution @ Dec 1st 2008 3:10PM
so is this a Jasper or not? since it has 175W power brick? me is confuzzled.
and old dashboard makes its cameo appearance in the video.
wickedman @ Dec 1st 2008 3:20PM
no, is a falcon, jasper is 150w and the plug will not fit on the falcon.so if u are looking for a jasper the info is japer 150w, falcon is 175w, and xenon are 203w
Vanillacide @ Dec 1st 2008 4:31PM
Yes it is a Jasper, because it has the built in memory, and 12.1A written on the console.
You can have power-supplies of greater power plugged into console and it draws what it needs, but you cannot have a lower power supply. So, a Falcon 175W power supply works on a Jasper console, but a Jasper 150W power supply does not work on a Falcon.
To ensure that you do not plug the wrong PSU in Microsoft have designed the plugs so that Jasper console works with Jasper, Falcon and Xenon PSU; Falcons work with Falcon and Xenon PSU; and Xenon only works with Xenon PSU.
Microsoft obviously still have a few 175W psu and have put some in the Jasper boxes.
Alex @ Dec 1st 2008 5:48PM
Oh, old Dashboard, how I miss thee!
I'm sick o' the NXE. Is it just me or is it VERY unstable and crashes all the time?
Mark @ Dec 1st 2008 8:36PM
I picked up an Arcade system from Target 4 days ago. It does indeed have internal memory and also the power is rated at 175w. The manufacturer date is 10/23/08. I can supply pictures if anyone has any questions.
Mark @ Dec 1st 2008 10:39PM
Here are some comparisons of my Jasper console to my 2006 xbox360.(my comment of the date before was wrong, i was going off memory)

Ryan Hartman @ Dec 1st 2008 3:30PM
So is there a way to identify Jaspers from Falcons when still in the box? Anything from the manufacturer codes or some such?
GoBob @ Dec 1st 2008 3:31PM
Honestly, it's too bad that they're getting rid of the memory card in favor of the internal memory. The memory card is great for when I go to my friends' houses.
brazenheaded @ Dec 1st 2008 5:57PM
I don't think they will be ditching the memory card anytime soon, it's not like Microsoft to just stop producing something that is making money for them.
This internal memory is there due to the NXE needing 200 or so megs of storage space to live on.
El Capitaine @ Dec 1st 2008 10:12PM
no, the MUs will not go away.
However, the problem is that Arcade users used to have their storage in a mobile format, which was very useful when traveling to the house of a Pro/Elite-owning friend.
Now, they'll need to buy an MU if they want it.
Makes sense to me when looking at it from the eyes of Microsoft - it certainly has to be cheaper to just increase the onboard storage from 32 to 256 then placing a 256 chip housed in plastic in every box. And, they get new purchases from Arcade users wanting MUs.
yolarrydabomb @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:37AM
I wish they make a 8GIG internal or external. memory card
mmm storage
Evil Bastard @ Dec 1st 2008 3:38PM
I have an XBOX which I picked up last summer, my memory card that came with it is reported as MU.
Dante @ Dec 1st 2008 3:54PM
Hhhmmm, is that a modded Xbox I see???
I miss those days...
Infiniti @ Dec 1st 2008 3:57PM
It is a Jasper if it comes with 256mb built-in flash memory. even if it got 175W PSU its still a jasper cus MS i phasing out the old powerbricks which btw still works on Jasper-360's. Though Jasper bricks doesn't work with falcons or older models.
wickedman @ Dec 1st 2008 8:21PM
is that what you want to believe?
Ben @ Dec 1st 2008 8:44PM
I exchanged my unstable arcade today at wal-wort and ended up with a Jasper system. It runs a lot quieter, and cooler, and the power brick has vents cut into the sides. Yes it has onboard memory (I thought I was trippin') and no memory card. This one hasn't frozen yet. An intercooler ex female plug isn't compatible anymore, though I doubt I'll need it.
yolarrydabomb @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:57AM
Power Supply's had holes since August I heard.
Mine doesn't :( sad face.
pibs @ Dec 1st 2008 10:11PM
yup they are jaspers, they have been cracked open and in the inside it includes a sticker that says jasper, its next to where the serial sticker on the board is at next to the fans. if I find the pic again ill post it up.
PARANOID365 @ Dec 1st 2008 10:53PM
After watching the above video I just had to chime in and say that the owner of the 360 in the video is an absolute idiot, because you never place a gaming system directly on the carpet. This is standard electronics knowledge people, never put your console, or any console for that matter, directly on the carpet because carpet is proven to create static electricity, (you know the little shock you can give others after walking on carpet), and when you have that static electricity charge directly in contact with your console and you turn it on, you are in essence sending that shock directly to your components, and simply put, say bye, bye to your system.
This is the exact reason a person working on a computer has to either wear an anti-static strap or at least discharge any built up static electricity by touching a metal object, (like the computer case), prior to touching anything in the computer.
In no way do I want to get into a long drawn out debate about the whole RROD controversy, but I have long suspected that one of the possible reasons that a lot of 360's are kicking the bucket is because of just this problem, placing your 360 directly on the carpet !!
I also believe that some of the 360 issues are also caused by people not venting their systems properly, or just plainly treating their systems like shit, (and I don't care who says otherwise but so many people do not take care of their electronics)!!
NOW BEFORE I GET FLAMED TO PIECES, I WANT TO MAKE IT VERY CLEAR THAT IN NO WAY AM I SAYING THAT THE RROD IS NOT DUE TO MICROSOFT'S SUB-PAR, SHODDY WORKMANSHIP, BUT I DO BELIEVE SOME OF THE ISSUES ARE CAUSED BY BONEHEADS LIKE THE OWNER IN THE VIDEO, AND BY MISTREATMENT PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
**sorry for the caps but I had to use them to prevent my point from getting lost in an outright flaming of my post**
yolarrydabomb @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:55AM
yeah I 2 saw a lot mistakes on that video.
Carpart. its like having a welcome mat for RROD.
RedSonRising @ Dec 2nd 2008 8:42AM
@ PARANOID365
if static can kill my 360 it deserves to die. anything that isnt installed on a space shuttle should be engineered to handle a lil static discharge. i know it can be dangerous for some electronics but clearly m$ did not build the 360 with those extreme tolerances in mind.
Author X @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:10PM
@PARANOID365: Are you... are you high? Or are you just trying to make a lame, overly-elaborate joke about blaming the users for early design and manufacturing issues that gave Microsoft a bad reputation that still hangs around? Because dude, Poe's Law.
Well, just in case someone reads this and takes you seriously (this can happen, believe it or not)
Yep, all that static electricity can be transferred right through the PLASTIC CASING. Because plastic is extremely conductive to tiny shocks of static electricity.
You have to use anti-static stuff to handle OPEN hardware. If the case couldn't handle a static charge on the outside, then that would mean no components were insulated from each-other! It's true that you shouldn't leave a gaming system that's prone to overheating on a carpet, but that's because the pads and design that's supposed to leave room underneath the vents for the fans to blow air out gets sunk into the carpet, and then the vents on the bottom are blocked, which contributes to overheating. But that has nothing to do with static electricity, and is hardly the end of the world.
Michael Bakshi @ Dec 1st 2008 11:51PM
So if my Xbox 360 says 14.2a on the back and it was made in September 4, 2008 it definitely isn't a Jasper?
It has the brick power supply with the vents but I have no way to test to see if I can access that 256 MB since I don't have a card.
B-rad @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:50AM
If it has 14.2a on the back it is NOT a Jasper. I bought an Arcade on Black Friday at Walmart, and unfortunately it has the 14.2a with no internal 256mb drive. It was manufactured on 10/13/08. Somebody else mentioned their Jasper model was made on 10/26/08. I missed it by a couple of weeks.... balls!
Oh well, at least there is the warranty. And as long as I take care of it (no 12 hour gaming sessions) it should be OK.
yolarrydabomb @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:52AM
if you don't see MU 256MB or 215MB on your storage device screen , that means its not a jasper. It's a falcon
maidsandharem @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:09AM
Hey im kinda new to the whole xbox "falcon" and "jaspers" or whatever stuff they're making for christmas, can anyone give me actual facts on the reliability on these things now? I want the arcade unit not for online but for gears 2, fable2 and maybe some other game for the future but do not intend on using online. How likely is it that i will get a red ring of death if i buy the new arcade model? Is it the same? Or have they improved?
yolarrydabomb @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:47AM
they just trying to improve it to keep it from RROD as much as others. So this might slove the problem or might not. time will tell.
hooking your xbox online is safe. Just pay for gold to play online, do not stand up your 360, lay it down. Do not cover the holes of your 360.
RROD stands for Red Ring Of Death. When that happens, it means that your xbox overheated and/or probably die of failed hardware.
yolarrydabomb @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:50AM
PS. I recommend the $300 dollar 360 Pro package, so you can install your games so you don't hear the buzz noise and also makes your cd drive last longer.
Arcades are not worth it!
yolarrydabomb @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:42AM
This is not the first screen shot that I saw MU listed as 3 drives.
Major Nelson had a storage of 3 devices on his 360
B-rad @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:55AM
Unless you already have a 20gb drive, then its a damned deal. You can buy the 20gb drives for $30 now, and for most people that is plenty of space.
RedSonRising @ Dec 2nd 2008 8:51AM
i really wanna get a jasper 360 to replace my current console. i need more hdd space, a new mic and another fresh controller anyway..
i wish they just put a big green JASPER sticker on the front.. i doubt anyone would notice and it would save a real fanboy some time looking at serial numbers and build dates..
Author X @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:16PM
The problem is, Microsoft doesn't want their old stock to just get thrown out. So they're hoping everyone will just keep buying 360's, and the old Falcon units will be bought up while they replace them with more Jaspers
Nathan @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:48PM
That's cool, but I wish I could have one of those. The Flash memory for the NXE would be great. Anything running off flash memory is better then anything mechanical.
