Abstract Mirror's Edge DLC coming in January
EA and DICE just announced that this coming January, Mirror's Edge's first downloadable content will be released bringing with it nine additional Time Trial races in an abstract world. The content's nine races will be spread across seven all newly created Time Trial maps that promise no cops or guns and are actually based outside the city. The new maps will be less "real" and be more blocky, abstract and, well ... random.
The DLC will set you back 800 Microsoft points and, for whatever reason, Mirror's Edge owners over on the PS3 will exclusively receive an additional map for free. Thanks for the 360 love DICE.

challenge rooms from Bionic Commander anyone?

@ PS3 exclusive content: Bitter much?
This looks great, don't own the game yet, but hopefully I'll be getting it for Christmas!
reyes @ Dec 4th 2008 1:55PM
It's a single level. Not much to be bitter about. If you were a PS3-owner who didn't own a 360, then you should be bitter for your "exclusive PS3 DLC" amounting to 1 extra level.
Noshino @ Dec 4th 2008 2:00PM
reyes,
Nothing has been confirmed by either Sony or EA, although it could be possible, you can't discard that idea of this DLC not being the one Sony paid for

I can not make up my mind whether to buy this game or not. It seems lately a lot of games have let me down...the only 2 games I have bought recently that lives up to what I thought they would be (and then some) is Left 4 Dead and GOW2.
AoE @ Dec 4th 2008 1:47PM
Well let me warn you... the storyline portion of the game, thanks to forced combat, can be frustrating. The shooting itself isn't terrible, but when your gun runs out of ammo you have to pick up a new one, no picking up clips for your current gun. Also hand-to-hand combat is garbage, Breakdown did it so much better, it's an inaccurate mess in Mirror's Edge.
All that being said... the time trial mode makes up for all of that. Suffer through the storyline once, then enjoy the hell out of time trial over and over.
So maybe rent it first and see if you like it, but be aware that the reason to play the game is time trial, NOT story mode.

The first time I heard about this game, I thought it sounded like a great 1600 MS point XBLA title. I mean the basis of the game...running. And it seems like I was kinda right. It got massive press and I thought I may be wrong. But so many people say that the time trial mode is the only good part...and it makes me think I was right, just release the time trial part as a game on XBLA. Look at how great Portal is. I had it with Orange Box, but as soon as it dropped on XBLA I bought it. Lol, and I still have not played it on XBLA much at all. But honestly, for a great game like that I would give them an extra $15...kinda like a appreciation gift. That game blew my mind that someone in this day and age could be that original with a title. Lets face it, most good ideas have already been taken and used 100 times already.
pandlcg @ Dec 4th 2008 2:25PM
I'd hold off on a purchase. It's a game you'll be able to get cheaply in 6 months and still get the same amount of enjoyment out of it.
And yes, time trial is the fun part.
West @ Dec 4th 2008 5:19PM
I bought it day one, but maybe that's just the racer in me that likes the speed runs. They kinda remind me a lot of the speed runs from my Halo 1 days. Ah yes, High Speed Halo...there were some crazy fast people out there.
If you're into that kind of thing, playing the same level over and over trying to get your best time, go for it. Otherwise, I'd just pick it up used. The story is only okay, but it is pretty addictive. Had a blast with friends, beating each others times and all, it was great. I love it.

The extra map for the PS3 is part of the deal Sony did with EA:
http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/09/02/mirrors-edge-to-have-ps3-exclusive-dlc-game-not-timed-exclusiv/
Very much like the exclusive deals MS has been doing with developers...
Oshi @ Dec 4th 2008 1:42PM
I think it's less "no love for 360" and more "taking pity on PS3".
Noshino @ Dec 4th 2008 1:58PM
Then by your reasoning, Rockstar must REALLY pity the 360 to be giving it 2 extra episodes, right?
Oshi @ Dec 4th 2008 2:02PM
No no, my reasoning stands for this situation only. :P
Prox @ Dec 4th 2008 1:42PM
I dare say this looks like the sort of thing the entire game should have been.
Tony Bowman @ Dec 4th 2008 1:49PM
exactly!
should have been like this, with episodic content, and sold on XBLM/PSN/whatever for 1600 points the main game with story-mode, then like 200 points for each time trial map after that.
Mazrael @ Dec 4th 2008 1:51PM
from what I heard.. DICE are Sony bias..
at least the DLC will be playing to the games strength.. the free running.. I honestly found the AI rubbish, and the combat dragged it a little.. When a cop blocks a flying kick, that you've just been running full throttle, just by raising his arm & barely staggers.. there's something wrong.. (ok it doesn't happen all the time).. but the game is really enjoyable when there is no AI around..
readmore @ Dec 4th 2008 2:00PM
I don't think they are bias. They had a deal with Sony for exclusive content. Frankly I'm surprised to see any DLC for Xbox! MS has Exclusive DLC for Fallout3 but I wouldn't say Bethesda is MS bias. It's just about who gave them the $$.
I actually think this is sort of sticking it to the PS3 crowd. I mean all they get is an extra map when most assumed the DLC would be all theirs.

Wow. I think these levels look more interesting than the actual game.
Jonman @ Dec 4th 2008 2:35PM
This sweetens my plan to buy this in the new year, when:
(a): there's no big releases
(b): all the kiddies that got it for Christmas are bored with it, and it floods the second hand market for cheap.
Now, to finish *deep breath* Fable 2, Fallout 3, L4D, Banjo (retail and XBLA).
saito ps3 @ Dec 4th 2008 3:08PM
really people? just because ps3 gets free dlc we have to hate on it and say DICE is feeling sorry for them? does that mean rockstar with their DLC for gta4 means that feel sorry for xbox 360? no, its business, xbox gets exclusive content, and so does ps3.
WEGGLES @ Dec 4th 2008 3:17PM
If this game was $40 with the DLC included, I'd pick it up. But it seems like it's lacking in content for $60 + $10.
Adam M O'Neill @ Dec 16th 2008 11:59PM
Eh, what's one extra map? Especially considering that the DLC was very nearly PS3 only. I say, enjoy PS3 fanboys, enjoy.
And maybe let us know how it is.
Karl @ Dec 5th 2008 9:40AM
So they're selling incomplete levels as "more abstract"?
Ianiscool @ Dec 5th 2008 12:44PM
Does this remind anyone else of super mario 64?
