Rock Band DLC eclipses 28 million downloads

After starting off the year with 2.5 million song downloads, then inching up to 6 million by March, Harmonix has revealed that the total number of Rock Band (and Rock Band 2) songs downloaded has eclipsed the 28 million mark. That's like an album going double diamond plus more.
With the announcement of the 28 million song downloads, Harmonix mentioned that that they reached their goal of making at least 500 songs available to Rock Band owners by years end. If you are wondering the exact number of DLC tracks available via the Music Store, it's 345 songs sung by 239 different artists. Congrats Harmonix, were were pessimists when you announced weekly Rock Band DLC releases, but now, after 55 consecutive weeks, we're believers.

Ah, how far Harmonix has come. Maybe now they'll try coercing Robert plant into letting Led Zeppelin into rock band. Or maybe release some more songs from The Who
EdgeOne @ Dec 6th 2008 6:46PM
Seriously! 500 songs is impressive, but some of the songs they put out were kind of obscure and not that fun to play repeatedly.
I would be willing to pay more than normal for epic bands/songs with great replayability (if that's a word). 18 songs from AC/DC for $40 from Wallyworld is not what I have in mind, though.
ice~ @ Dec 6th 2008 7:25PM
i planned on buying that, but a trip to Walmart wasnt worth it. Problem is, AC/DC will never be DLC, EVER lol.

28 million songs at 99c per song? Harmonix is making bank!
sjs2626 @ Dec 6th 2008 1:07PM
Actually, it's more like $2 a song, so twice as much bank!
a ham sandwich @ Dec 6th 2008 2:37PM
and actually, im sure most of that goes to licensing. even so, whats left over is STILL a lot of money!
dicknjane @ Dec 6th 2008 1:06PM

bugatti23007 @ Dec 7th 2008 6:44PM

Deck @ Dec 6th 2008 1:39PM
w00t! That's just crazy!
Harmonix is great!
Tegolin @ Dec 6th 2008 2:28PM
Yay for Harmonix!!
Deezul @ Dec 6th 2008 2:53PM
You know, EA has to see those numbers and is probably thinking, "Why should we just distribute these games? Activision owns Red Octane. We should buy Harmonix."
So we'll see who loves Harmonix when that happens. And don't think there haven't been talks.
Mazrael @ Dec 6th 2008 4:51PM
I thought EA already owned them..
Tann @ Dec 6th 2008 5:00PM
EA owns Harmonix...
lol
Ghoti @ Dec 6th 2008 6:35PM
Actually, Electronic Arts does not own Harmonix, MTV does (or at least I'm pretty sure).
Viridium @ Dec 6th 2008 10:24PM
MTV Networks is their parent company; Viacom is the owner.
EA is just a distributor in this case, I believe.
Deezul @ Dec 7th 2008 9:16AM
Glad some of you did your home work. Distribution != ownership. Remember, Bungie games will still be distributed by MS Games on the 360/PC side.
Aero @ Dec 7th 2008 9:06AM
I still remember when they said Guitar Hero 3 would have the most DLC ever.
Haha.
tcc3 @ Dec 8th 2008 6:52AM
You still remember poorly. 1st of all it was GH2. Harmonix didn't have anything to do with 3. Secondly they had no way of knowing Red Octane would be aquired by Activision. Alot of the plans they had for GH2 dlc got postponed and used for Rockband.
bugatti23007 @ Dec 7th 2008 6:17PM
It would be close to 100 million if there were tons of Metalcore bands on rock band.
bugatti23007 @ Dec 7th 2008 7:00PM
When is Harmonix going to realize that Fall out Boy,All American rejects, and 30 seconds to mars are not emo.Emo is Rites of Spring and Sunny Day Real Estate. The only bands that come close to emo is Saosin, Underoath(old band) and Hawthorne Heights.
Matthew @ Dec 7th 2008 9:27PM
So maybe I'm confused, but isn't 345 songs less than the 500 they are professing???
FdUmCh @ Dec 8th 2008 4:31AM
they are counting in the song on rb1 and rb2 disc
Ghoti @ Dec 8th 2008 11:33AM
The count of 500 was always intended to include DLC and the on-disc songs (RB1, RB2, and AC-DC track pack). They also have another 13 coming out this week from No Doubt, next week the rumor is some country songs (but I bet we get other ones too), and they still have 2 albums, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jane's Addiction, to get out by the end of the year (assuming they hold true to what they said they'd release earlier this year).
