Ask X3F: Excellent good friends edition

Got a question for Ask X3F? Maybe you have a story or some information you'd like to share? Send it all to ask [att] xbox360fanboy [dawt] com.
To The Fanboys Of Tomorrow,
Hey fanboys and girls, I first want to say since I've found your website only one week ago, I've adored it! You of course keep in touch with the 360, and are ACTUAL GAMERS. Now, I am writing to ask a question of course, but first I would like to talk about the famous company Valve. Valve is a great company, and all of there games have good reviews and are still being played by millions. With Valves release of Left 4 Dead which came out last tuesday, everyone rejoiced as they played a game based on four of America's most loved things: Zombies, Friends, Weapons, and classic B Movies. like any other Valve game, as stated before, it will have millions of players. Now for my question, when I play Left 4 Dead, it is sometimes hard for me to find a game, or when I actually join or make a game it is hard to find one of Valve's "Dedicated Servers". When I actually got a game going, I checked my connection, and I'd always have full bars (worth the @#$%ing hundred bucks for the adapter). Is it my connection, or Valves servers?
In a nutshell, I'm saying: "Help fanboys (and girls) you are my last resort!"
From Franky D, Chicago IL. GO BEARS!
Gamertag: Evil Sandmonkey
First, yes, Left 4 Dead is pretty damned sweet. We all agree on that here at Fanboy Towers (and the Joystiq network in general, actually). It is sweet for all the reasons you mentioned and more. For example, you forgot to Molotov cocktails. We love those too. As for you issue, we're not sure what the problem is. We've never had trouble getting into matches online, though we tend to stick to only playing with friends. We have encountered lag before, but we've never had any matchmaking issues. We honestly weren't even aware there were dedicated servers for the 360 version, so we can't help you there. We can suggest all the usual things to. Check to see if your router is officially supported by Microsoft (here's a list of compatible routers). You should also check your network settings on your Xbox 360. Matchmaking issues are often created if you have "Moderate" or "Strict" NAT types. If you have either of those NAT types, you should try a different router.
Anyone out there know a solution to Franky's problem?
In NXE, why on earth is "Spotlight" the default menu instead of "My Xbox"? The solution: don't sign into Xbox LIVE and everything works as it should.
Also, note that when offline, the R/L Triggers conveniently bring you back to the "My Xbox" menu -- how thoughtful! Except that WHEN YOU'RE ON XBOX LIVE IT BRINGS YOU TO SPOTLIGHT INSTEAD. Are you f-ing kidding me?
Note to Microsoft: Crippling your software for paying customers is doing it the wrong way.
-Grant
Grant, first thing's first: Take a deep breath. Let it out. Relax. Better? Good. The answer to your conundrum is quite simple: Microsoft wants to sell you things. Also, since you're already paying for Xbox Live (or have gone through the trouble of setting up a Silver account), MS knows you're fairly dedicated to their machine. In the case of Gold members, MS knows you're already paying it money, so why not see if you'll pay a little more? Thus, the first thing you see when you boot up your 360 is an advertisement for something. Don't expect that to change.
K so I would like to be like everyone else and say that I love this site. Been a reader for a year or so now and i hope you guys keep it coming.
My question is about the friends list on the xbox. Recently i tried to add some of you guys because i thought it would be awesome to play with all of you sense the lack of mature gamers on the xbox is appalling, but your friends lists are all full. This was a disappointment to me but then it made me think, why do they have a limit on the friends list? what if you want more than 200 friends? what do you guys think about this? Are you glad that you dont have to accept more than 200 people to be your friends? Also, i was just wondering, when you log onto xbox live do how many people send you invites and how often? Thanks for your comments and help
Jordan
GT: hAnGoVeR17
The limit is actually only 100 friends and this issue has been around for a very long time. According to our conversations with Microsoft, the list is capped at 100 based on two things. One, the average number of friends any user has on live is much lower than 100 (it hovers around 25 according to MS). The second reason has to do with system resources. As you can imagine, keeping track of the status of 100 friends requires a certain amount of the Xbox 360's resources. If you start adding to that number, you take away resources from other things that might need them (e.g. games). That's the official line, anyway.
As for how many requests we rich and powerful bloggers get, well, we get a lot. It would be hard to gauge the actual frequency of the invites, but they seem to come in waves (after a podcast is posted, for example). Though we usually have full friends lists, we tend to clean them out regularly to allow new people to send requests. Also, even though our lists our full, we tend to play more regularly with people we personally know, just like most gamers do.
Yet another NXE question (be patient). When I heard we were getting this update I figured it was going to be a new dashboard from the ground up. Alas, after a week of playing it's apparent that it's just some pretty makeup on the same stinky pig. It still takes more than a half dozen clicks to download anything and then at least two more to get back to the spot where you started from. When going to your game, video, music and picture libraries it still takes forever to build the list of items you have on your console. I'm sure they could figure out a way to just read from a small index file that gets updated when you download or delete an item. And my last gripe is the lack of options for sorting items in the marketplace. I guess it's too much to ask to be able to sort by date. And finally my question: WTF?
Thanks,
nikescar
Yup, there are still many annoying features in the NXE. We particularly dislike how long it takes for our list of Arcade games to populate. This same complaint can be applied to the Game Marketplace when you have to wait for it to allow you to download something like a demo. Still, the we feel the new features make up for the annoyances (the new Guide in particular). Anyone out there have any NXE annoyances they'd like to vent about? Do so in the comments.

What Avatar? That's just a photograph*.
hey,
I have a scratched Madden NFL 09. If I borrow my friend's CD and install it to the hard drive, will my scratched copy work? It seems like it would, since the disk isn't spinning or anything. All it would have to do is detect that i have it in the tray, and it would work fine...Right?
-Thanks,
Alex
Yes, from what we have heard, you should be able to install a friends disc and then use yours for the disc check. As long as the 360 can at least identify the disc in the tray, it should work just fine.
Hey everyone,
I couldn't find answers anywhere so I really hope you guys can help me out. I'm going to be traveling in a couple of days by plane on an international flight. My brother leaves abroad and I was thinking of buying Rock Band 2 as a surprise gift. I'm going to buy the special edition of Rock Band 2 and I was wondering if airport security will allow me to carry the box with me onto the plane. I thought about shipping it but I'm scared the instruments will break from the possible abuse from all of the luggage falling on it. Any advice?
Thanks,
Rami

We're fairly certain that the answer to this question is a big fat no, especially with the economy the way it is, causing airlines cracking down on luggage. We asked frequent flyer and Joystiq head honcho Chris Grant, and he thinks it would probably safe to check it as luggage. Be sure to have someone label it as fragile though. You could also try calling your airline and explain the situation to them. They may be willing to allow you to carry the box onto the plane and check it once you're on board (similar to how airlines handle larger carry-ons). Still, with space at a premium and airlines being very strict about luggage these days, you may be forced to check it at the front desk. Whatever you do, be sure to arrive at the airport early enough to deal with any complications, especially if you're flying before the holiday season is over.
Remember, these boxes were designed to withstand the rigors of the shipping process, so hopefully it can survive one way or another. Good luck!
That's it for this week, folks. Keep sending your questions to: ask [att] xbox360fanboy [dawt] com.

Regarding the Rock Band 2 box question, I carried a guitar and case with me onto an Air Canada plane that was bigger than the RB2 box. It didn't fit in any of the compartments so they let me leave it at the front of the plane. That's Air Canada at least, dunno about your airline.
Latin Trident @ Dec 9th 2008 7:31PM
I asked x3f this but no response. Maybe everybody else can help...
Will there be an internet browser on the 360? Anybody know?
cloud858rk @ Dec 9th 2008 7:53PM
Nope, never. Microsoft wants you to buy Windows for that. >.>
Latin Trident @ Dec 9th 2008 8:10PM
Paying $200 something for an OS just for the internet (not to mention the physical computer) is retarded! I would rather pay 400 MS points for IE on the 360 and I am sure they can do that. I think they would sell more chat pads if they did that.
Jcarpio @ Dec 9th 2008 9:49PM
Um.. as much as my life revolves around Microsoft (work and play). I really would not want IE on my console. I don't think they'll allow us to download firefox, chrome or safari on the box.
joeybeast @ Dec 10th 2008 10:20AM
Probably not.
I have my computer and 360 hooked up the same same monitor and speaker.
Bust the Xbox 360 is the only console on the market without a browser.
It makes me appreciate my lame PSP browser.

Oh and to the guy complaining about the default tab. They're advertising items on their service. It's not like it's Sony's home where you can go to the Dr Pepper store or something (yes, I know it's free).
But why stop there I say. Why don't you complain about watching commercials in front of movies at the theatre.
It's advertising, get used to it. It pays the bills.
mcwattersm @ Dec 9th 2008 10:14PM
Not really...
It gets a bunch of already rich people rich.
AoE @ Dec 9th 2008 10:37PM
@mcwattersm,
You have a very warped view of reality if you honestly believe that everyone at MS is loaded... yes many at the top are, but it's a huge organization, nearly 90,000 employees. As Jcarpio stated, it helps them pay the bills (which yes, you will be shocked to find out that companies also have to spend money on stuff, not just collect it). I suppose all of this will make a lot more sense once you get out into the rat race with the rest of us :)
After a few years working you start to understand business in a much different way than you do as a youth.
dylan @ Dec 10th 2008 3:06AM
I was under the impression that selling games pays the bills, and adding steps between me and my games in a very competitive industry seems to go in favor of the other guys machine. I hate how hard it is to find friends to play with on PS3, so I use Xbox, but if it becomes too complicated to even play a game on 360, I may switch.
Oh, and I HATE the fact that I have to watch 20 minutes of ads before a movie, IMO movies with ads before and product placement during should be free.
Jcarpio @ Dec 10th 2008 7:56AM
"I hate how hard it is to find friends to play with on PS3, so I use Xbox, but if it becomes too complicated to even play a game on 360, I may switch. "
Well Dylan, if you switch.. good like trying to play a game when Home gets released.
marauder800 @ Dec 10th 2008 10:43AM
One D-pad press to get to My Xbox. What a chore! What's that whiny brat going to do when he grows up and has actual problems???? Get over it and enjoy the NXE and be thankful its not Home, which is pretty damned lame by comparison.
Antler @ Dec 10th 2008 3:42PM
The discussion is about ads affecting *usability*, not their presence in general. The old dashboard had ads, but they did not get in the way of using the device.
Muckrak3r @ Dec 9th 2008 10:05PM
I can't stand how anything on the NXE that is selling you something, populates IMMEDIATELY and completely. But watch how long it takes for your friends list and party members to populate fully. Its literally ridiculous.
I understand MS wants to sell stuff, I have no problem with that, but when Inside Xbox, Spotlight, Game Marketplace, and Video Marketplace (4 out of 7) all are selling you stuff and they populate instantly that is really annoying. The marketplace option was fine before. I would only enter that blade when I wanted to freaking buy something.
And yes it does take wayyyy too long to load your arcade game titles or previously played game titles. But if you want to damn buy something it loads lightning quick. Eat me MS.

stinger503 @ Dec 9th 2008 11:10PM
I just use the xbox.com marketplace now. So much easier since you can just open multiple tabs :)
DjDATZ @ Dec 13th 2008 1:58PM
Agreed. No more need to browse through endless menus and wait for them to LOAD FOREVER.
Randomslagathor @ Dec 10th 2008 7:49AM
Any 1 know how to find the played games section in the nxe? In old version before I could find it under game add ons but now can't find it any 1 know?
Brent @ Dec 9th 2008 11:32PM
I have Left 4 Dead and I must say that I hate playing it online. I just wanna get online to get my achievements, but there's always some dillhole who wants to play to win and leave me to die in the subways so they can beat the other team. I have yet to get one of these achievements.
Deck @ Dec 10th 2008 2:29AM
Really, its not always about the achievements.
dylan @ Dec 10th 2008 3:08AM
stop playing versus and play co-op, they did a great job of forcing people to work together... and I've met a lot of really nice people who have fun playing as a team...
Musicman247 @ Dec 9th 2008 11:55PM
Regarding Rock Band 2, aren't the game discs Region Coded? If your brother lives abroad it would stand to reason that he has a different Region Code on his Xbox than you do. You might check about ordering the game from a store in the country where he lives and either ship it to him, or make arrangements to pick it up once you're there.
It would completely suck to buy the game and go through the hassle of bringing it with you only to find out it won't play on his system.
Premo @ Dec 10th 2008 1:36AM
I don't see why so many people complain about the spotlight tab.
I mean, its just scrolling down and up.
Deck @ Dec 10th 2008 2:30AM
I second that Premo. I do not understand their complaining regarding this at all.
Antler @ Dec 10th 2008 4:19PM
Let's ignore the fact that there are ads there, and say Spotlight was a completely blank tab -- nothing at all on your screen.
You just had to hit up to get to My Xbox, where it tells you what disc is in the drive and lets you actually see the games and videos on your system.
Preferring that extra step is absurd -- it makes my console less useful to me, just as the presence of pop-up ads make the internet less useful -- it has nothing to do with the ads, it's that there is an extra window you have to clear before getting to the content -- the whole reason you clicked a link in the first place.
Obstacles do not make me happy, and unnecessary ones are even worse. You hear so much fuss about it because it is a single blemish on an otherwise beautiful system.
mfosa @ Dec 10th 2008 1:51AM
I've sent this question to AskX3F but probably didn't make it to the top 10 most pressing question of the week.
I am in Russia and the new Gears2 Disc is not shipping with the flashback map pack. Does anyone have Epic/MS connections to help answer why we are not given the map pack code?
mattclarkie @ Dec 10th 2008 4:02AM
The NXE is a big disappointment.
The thing is slow, it keeps freezing the console for 20/30 seconds at a time.
And the new guide is not useful, any feature not on the original quide gives you a message along the lines of "You must quit your current session to continue, this will lose any unsaved progress".
Same Dashboard, but worse in 90% of situations.
Timerider @ Dec 10th 2008 11:31AM
Valve still needs to update TF2.

"You should also check your network settings on your Xbox 360. Matchmaking issues are often created if you have "Moderate" or "Strict" NAT types."
In the new dashboard, where is this? the "check network settings"now only shows me lights.
Richard Mitchell @ Dec 11th 2008 3:50PM
According to Major Nelson, if your NAT is Open, you won't see anything about it during the connection test.
If it's either Moderate or Strict, it should tell you when you perform the test.
rookie.of.the.year @ Dec 10th 2008 6:52PM
On the whole I like the NXE, the advertising stuff can be annoying, but it's a necessary evil I guess. My main gripe is how slow it has become, I've often thought my console has actually crashed when it's really just taking 30 seconds to open up a profile or message or something, it's ridiculous.
