Avatars vs. Miis vs. Home people ... FIGHT!
In the battle of video game customizable character thingymabobs, there can be only one winner. Now, with Sony's release of Home and its unique inhabitants, we have a battle between the big three and only one victor can be crowned.
Gamesradar set up a battle between Xbox 360's Avatars versus the Nintendo's Miis and the Playstation 3's Home characters in a console avatar showdown by comparing each console's rendition of various people's likenesses. And after comparing to see which console is best at remaking said person, a victor is chosen. It's definitely a judgment based war, so we'll go ahead and award our console likeness creating winner to be the 360's Avatars. Not because we're Xbox 360 fanboys, but because ... well, actually, that's exactly why.

Avatars and Home people rule, Miis suck IMO
Avatars are cute, Home.... well, not cute so I like that too.
I like the real look and the cute look
Cj @ Dec 11th 2008 4:52PM
Avatars win this round.
elmersglue @ Dec 12th 2008 2:52AM
tell that to the guys who wrote the article...clearly biased towards the wii.... there were quite a few that were awarded winners for the wii, but were clearly better in avatar form....
gah i hate the wii...it's a piece of shit.
Karl @ Dec 11th 2008 5:03PM
Wii is dead
Loban @ Dec 11th 2008 4:59PM
Wow, judging by the renditions of the joker shown above (I can't open the actual link at work), I'd say the Xbox avatars win by a landslide. The leftmost joker....well....looks like the joker. The other two look like crap. The Home person looks terrible.
ryan @ Dec 11th 2008 5:06PM
Hey nice Avatar Joker. What are the other two supposed to be? :P
Mussbus999 @ Dec 11th 2008 5:05PM
The avatars definitely win.
The Home guy looks like he asked his blind boyfriend to do his makeup for him.
Ianiscool @ Dec 11th 2008 5:04PM
I vote miis.
Phocas @ Dec 11th 2008 5:37PM
I vote your a douche..
yolarrydabomb @ Dec 12th 2008 1:47AM
I second that
douche bag.
psychohog @ Dec 11th 2008 5:05PM
I love my 360 but hate the avatars. They seem too childish for me. I have to go with the home people.
Alex @ Dec 11th 2008 5:16PM
I completely agree.
They should be an optional thing, just because I hate having stuff forced on me, especially if I don't like it to start with.
Edge @ Dec 11th 2008 5:34PM
They are more optional than you let on. You can... you know... ignore them and turn them off in games that use them.
JCP @ Dec 11th 2008 5:06PM
the joker avatar definitely look more appealing as compared to the other 2 and I feel like my avatar looks like me and all my friends that modeled their avatars after themselves look pretty good to,
I just which Microsoft had incorporated some sort of personality system, for example if your in the "pro zone" your avatar will have different behaviors than your friend who's "underground" or "casual" As of now they all just do the same thing.
DarkNightRJ @ Dec 11th 2008 5:19PM
For these comparisons, I like the Avatars. The home guys look pretty cool tho.
We just need more custom stuff for avatars, I would like to be able to change color of clothes.
Mazrael @ Dec 11th 2008 5:28PM
the avatar definatly wins that one.. Mii's are far too basic, & were dissapointing.. those home things have very few options at the moment, that one even looks like my mates one, and it didn't take him log to bump into people who looked the same (but it is only a beta so far) the jumper/sweat shirt (I'm not sure what you call them in the US), but that one looks like you have 3 on at the same time.. Avatars are the half way house.. theyre informal, they luckily don't let you adjust all the features to create a penis face.. theres loads on the Mii parade.. and at the moment Avatars have a really small range of clothes.. to make me, there's only one tshirt, & a blue pair of jeans, because there are no black ones.. there needs to be a lot more clothing, then we're only getting 4 or so items every 4 weeks.. I agree with someone above who said they need personallites.. I flick through my friends list for camp waves.. I want my avatar to be moody, unengaging but friendly.. theyre just a little too happy, but then I'm usually playing a game or in the music menu inbetween, so I only really see mine when I boot up the console..
Edge @ Dec 11th 2008 5:32PM
I'd say that's fair to give the Mii a slight advantage due to it's incredible customization, but it's a bit biased since that feature would help create a celebrity the best.
I still say 360 is close enough to force a runoff election, but PS3 is so distant a third it can go Home now..
Haohmaru @ Dec 11th 2008 5:39PM
Miis, Avatars, and Home.. people.. in that order. The Mii customization is very simplified in design, but it never ceases to amaze me how creative people can be with what they offer.
There's just something "off" about the Home guys. I just can't put my finger on it.
xenocidic @ Dec 12th 2008 10:13AM
is it the fact they all look like trannies?
Haohmaru @ Dec 12th 2008 2:53PM
No. The one above does, but I can say that mine doesn't. Mine still manages to freak me out, but not because of any perceived, uh, "tranniness."
I'm not too fond of the Live Avatars either, though. As simple in design they might be, I still prefer my Mii's over both. I suppose it's just further evidence that sometimes trying to copy/"improve" upon Nintendo's ideas can backfire. D:
Om @ Dec 14th 2008 8:41PM
It's called Uncanny Valley.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_Valley
I gotta say I did not like the idea of the xbox avatars at first but I think they (Rare) have hit the sweet spot between the (rather pathetic) Mii's and the early yet somewhat freaky home characters I have seen that have this uncanny trait.
Om
Poore Richard @ Dec 11th 2008 5:51PM
Mii easily (simple but very customizable), Avatar is alright, for some reason the avatars seem to have strangely feminine stances even with the male figures. The home thing is horrid junk, it's hard to tell what the hell it's suppose to be (even its gender), not to mention the strive for realism is not appealing, it reminds of that crap-ass uninspired Myst Uru character creation BS.
DBoyFlex @ Dec 11th 2008 6:00PM
I think the idea behind home is good, but obviously has its kinks. I do imagine it would get old. I remember how old the bowling got in GTA4, but I guess with real life friends it might be better. I do like the sims-like idea though.
TheUsedVersion @ Dec 11th 2008 6:13PM
Sorry but the Joker looks a little too Ronald McDonald for me. Someone had to say it.
I have to admit I didn't realize that the avatars were so.... "cute" until I read this article with all the different characters. Almost too cute actually.
Mal F4cti0n @ Dec 11th 2008 6:14PM
I do like the 360 avatar best, but that is probably because it is the prettiest and most accurate.
The Mii is grainy and looks odd.
The PS3 is too realistic and looks like a chick.
volkiller421 @ Dec 11th 2008 6:27PM
x360 wins
Sisyphus @ Dec 11th 2008 6:31PM
Miis by virtue of being the first and offering a ton of flexibility. Creative minds can make almost anything out of them, obscene and otherwise. Besides, that Avatar joke looks like Caesar Romero even though they were probably trying to go for a contemporary version of the Joker.
Deck @ Dec 11th 2008 6:33PM
I like the graphics of the home people, however..
If this is purely a contest on which one is a better make of the Joker, I'd have to say the 360 avatar is by far better. The Home person really just looks like there is makeup spread over the face. Do they not offer face point in home?
ForestLaw @ Dec 11th 2008 6:37PM
If people are supposed to decide which is better based upon the picture above its kind of unfair. Both the mii and the homers were made pretty badly, while the avatar seems to be like a premade costume.
Nick the Hero of Canton @ Dec 11th 2008 6:39PM
Mii wins the best modern Joker (Dark Knight)
Avatar has a classic feel, spot on for the old Batman TV series.
PS3....just no.
jarhead906 @ Dec 11th 2008 7:34PM
Considering that Home just launched its Open Beta, it is kind of early to include 'Homers' in the contest. Half the stuff isn't even on there to make people the way you want. But, nice gesture from X3F to subtly bash PS3 avatars.
Bravo6 @ Dec 11th 2008 7:55PM
The avatar one is definitely the best, however I have no green hair option in mine. Am I missing something or was it 'shopped? Conspiracy!!!
Mazrael @ Dec 11th 2008 9:05PM
just highligh the hairstyles option in 'avatar editor' wait about a minute, & it'll rotate, I presses 'A' as it did this.. but other people found it works differently for some.. no idea why..
Badaro @ Dec 11th 2008 8:09PM
From personal experience, Miis > Avatars, even though they lack the possibility of customizing the outfit.
Miis offer far more customization for the facial features, and also allow some fine-tuning that goes a long way to make them look like someone you know.
mcwattersm @ Dec 11th 2008 8:52PM
Home's whatteverthefuckyouwanttocallem's are much more detailed, compared to the other two consoles, which just seem childish.
maxpontiac @ Dec 11th 2008 9:54PM
Congrats XBots.
You get the most cartoon looking virtual avatar that does absolutely nothing.
But hey, everybody always wanted a bobblehead of themselves, or the Joker, right?
Meanwhile, I'll play bowling, pool, chess, and 4 different arcade games with mine right now.
Edboy @ Dec 12th 2008 4:32AM
have fun playing with the 5 other people who still own a PS3.
I'll go play games and have fun on two consoles for the price of a giant dust magnet.
Highwind33 @ Dec 11th 2008 11:03PM
lol, Home fails.. (especially Whoopy Goldberg)
I hope some more add on would help a lot, like more hairstyle, clothing choices and such. ^^
Miis are pretty creative, and when you got it right, it just clicks. ^^
Avatars are cute.. cute .. :)
Nathew @ Dec 11th 2008 11:07PM
miis seem to be the easiest to make, while home seems to be the most realistic.
Tann @ Dec 12th 2008 2:31AM
lol home people
Edboy @ Dec 12th 2008 4:40AM
In all fairness, the miis are better but since people here are too stupid to CLICK THE SOURCE button, I'll explain. The article on Games Radar is about which of the 3 make better celebrity impersonations and it fails on that. Not which one makes the better joker, not which one looks prettier, but the one who happens to have a better impersonation that Games Radar pulled off the net.
That's it, you big stupid piles of meat.
Boff @ Dec 12th 2008 6:11AM
Sticks and stones!
Fluffy @ Dec 12th 2008 7:33AM
The uncanny valley comes into play with this, i see the home people as sort of scary :S
Tim @ Dec 12th 2008 8:55AM
Whatever one you think looks best, go read the article. This nearly had me laughing to tears in the office this morning. Funniest thing I've read in a while!
Ujn Hunter @ Dec 12th 2008 9:11AM
I think they are all equally ghey... but not as ghey as the people who make friggin' Jokers everywhere. Batman is ghey too.
paul @ Dec 13th 2008 4:05PM
you've won this time wii! avatars are supposed to look good but the wiis ugly... ok i own a wii and an xbox 360 but... stupid wii.....
SkeetSkiLee @ Dec 13th 2008 12:02PM
i think this wasnt really fair for Home i mean... it's still in beta and not everything is released for it. i think Avatars should've won.
Lukkie @ Dec 19th 2008 7:31PM
this is kinda biased in a way.... why put this on a fanboy blog of all places?
Kiro @ Jan 10th 2009 10:13PM
I have a Wii, and I also think the Miis suck. THEY'RE USELESS!
