Jasper 360s: Secret to succesful identification

We spotted an informative writeup over at AnandTech regarding various Xbox 360 Jasper identification strategies. What's a Jasper? Well, Jasper is the codename for the latest Xbox 360 models to roll off production and house tiny 65nm CPU and GPUs. The smallest, coolest, least power demanding, most stable and generally "best" Xbox 360 version to be manufactured.
Anyhoo, if you're in the market for a 360, we highly recommend you try to secure a Jasper 360 using a few of AnandTech's Jasper identification strategies. They've detailed tips including console lot number matching, looking up the console wattage and - most accurate of all - looking at the power connector. Remember, Jaspers are teh hawtness. You want Jaspers.

Yes master. I want Jasper. ;)

"Remember, Jaspers are teh hawtness."
I think technically you mean they are the new coolness (since they run much cooler than other models)
I know I know poor joke but its 10 in the morning what do you expect!!
sag969 @ Dec 11th 2008 11:10AM
Too bad that wherever you buy a new 360, its not like you can ask to have the box open, the 360 removed and unwrapped, to check the power connector. I guess you could buy it and return it, but that's even more effort lol.
Saccia @ Dec 11th 2008 11:14AM
Read the article. Many of the ways are things you can tell just by looking at the box or the power input through the little serial number window on the box.
sag969 @ Dec 11th 2008 11:30AM
Read the article: "most accurate of all" way of identifying is by looking at the power connector.
Stiffro @ Dec 11th 2008 3:07PM
Just check the current rating of the 12V bus, the article indicates it's a surefire way to determine if it's a Jasper through the serial number window on the box.
Anyone know if it's quieter?
daniel @ Dec 11th 2008 11:22AM
My power cable doesn't look like any of those
and i got mine in August.
marklar @ Dec 11th 2008 1:16PM
i don't think it's the cable - it's the *back* of the xbox
B3S7Y @ Dec 11th 2008 11:32AM
Does any of this get replaced after the RROD issue
Urza @ Dec 11th 2008 11:51AM
Why can't microsoft just put jasper on the label.. sheesh.
eric f. @ Dec 11th 2008 11:53AM
because then people wouldn't buy the older ones.
ovet @ Dec 11th 2008 12:12PM
Hooray! According to the article I got a Jasper.
However, it also came with a 175W power supply.
myabsolution @ Dec 11th 2008 12:36PM
Yeah they said some would come with the 175W power supply.
"If you get a Jasper it's not guaranteed that you'll get a 150W power supply, Microsoft still has a lot of Falcons and Falcon-parts in its distribution system so some Jaspers have been sighted with 175W power supplies."
Conor @ Dec 11th 2008 12:26PM
My power cable looks nothing like those above.
Got the xbox this novmeber.
David @ Dec 11th 2008 12:45PM
oh crap - i got a zephyr!
oh well, ite treated me very well and have had no problems...yet ...holds thumbs
Loban @ Dec 11th 2008 2:31PM
Don't worry too much about it. I have a Zephyr and my bro has a Falcon. My DVD drive has failed twice, and my bro's has RRoDed once. Technically, mine should have RRoDed before his, and yet I've never had a problem. As for the DVD drive issues, I'm pretty sure any variant is susceptible to it.
David @ Dec 12th 2008 1:25AM
Well the DVD drive is a mechanical device that is almost constantly working so i would expect it to packup...eventually.
I'm not to worried actually- i still have a year left on the warranty and if it does go I'll just get another , they are cheap enough now.
soundcircus @ Dec 11th 2008 12:55PM
Hmm... Mine doesn't look like these either... And i brought mine in November... The MFR date on back of my 360 says... 29/07/08
kentawilson @ Dec 11th 2008 1:00PM
Not taking anything away from this article but Ben Heck put up one as well. It's over on Engadget and it's pretty detailed as well.
Ventrix @ Dec 11th 2008 2:30PM
I have the halo 3 edition 360. It has a different connector than all 3 of those. Can anyone tell me what generation my 360 is please?
Ventrix @ Dec 11th 2008 2:39PM
I got this system for only 150 bucks, almost brand new. I'm just hoping it has a Jasper, can anyone help me out?
Mazrael @ Dec 11th 2008 2:59PM
ah, knew my elite was a zephyr, it's served me well.. though when elites become Jaspers, I'll be wanting one..
Mazrael @ Dec 11th 2008 3:10PM
doubtful.. havent you said your 360 is really loud, My old Xenon Pro was.. but my elite is fairly quiet, unless a disc is spinning in there, but I wouldn't say mine was loud..
I'm sure the Halo models were Xenon/Zephyr.. although, which tray & fans you got make a difference..
brytdavis @ Dec 11th 2008 3:18PM
Sweet! I gots me a Jasper ...
Andre @ Dec 11th 2008 4:25PM
OMFG! GUYS I JUST CHECKED AND I HAVE A JASPER.YESSSSS JASPER FTW!!!!!
MadamTampini @ Dec 11th 2008 4:48PM
Mine is a first gen, got it in August of 2006. It lasted me almost 2 years before I got RROD.
Premo @ Dec 11th 2008 11:01PM
1st gen.
Funny. I got this one just after Christmas last year.
Oh well. With 360s, i suppose it comes down to "It works or it doesn't work".
Kyleia @ Dec 12th 2008 12:07AM
I saw a Jasper at work today - it was manufactured 11/3/08.
magicianoffear @ Dec 12th 2008 10:00AM
I got tired of waiting for a Jasper (too many games I wanted to play) so I caved and got a last revision Falcon board (MFD:Sept 2008) . Honestly the Jasper must double as a fridge because my Falcon barely gets hot at all (nothing like my Xenon's got before I sold it) just warm and runs way cooler then my Metal Gear 80GB PS3. Still I am glad the newer Xbox's (hopefully mine as well) are made better, because during those Xenon/Zephyr days I was not so happy with the 360.
ArmorForVictor = PSN & XBL GT @ Dec 12th 2008 12:31PM
i just bought an arcade and just checked it happens to be a jasper :D kinda glad i got the "best" one since this is my first 360
dearkyleb @ Feb 17th 2009 9:35AM
is it true that its 0% RROD?
