Eurogamer
reports that the latest numbers from GfK Chart-Track put Microsoft's Xbox 360 sales at about 1 million units ahead of Sony's Playstation 3 in the European territories of France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom. The news comes hot on the heels of Sony
claiming an overall lead "in PAL territories" of 300,000 units. Eurogamer points out, however, that PAL territories include countries outside of Europe, such as Australia. The Xbox 360 enjoyed a record month in November, which surely contributed to the current lead. Also, as Eurogamer points out, it's worth noting that the Xbox 360 launched a full year prior to the PS3, making the million unit lead seem less substantial.
Of course, given the recent Xbox 360
price cut in Europe and the fact that Sony has no plans to lower the price of the Playstation 3 anytime soon, Microsoft's lead may just continue to widen.

@Richard: Are the 1 million units the number of systems sold or is it the number of systems sold to retailers?
Sony, I believe, only counts systems bought by consumers and was just wondering. Thanks.

There is no 'real' way to track units sold to customers. And good luck selling more to 'real' customers if you have shipped less out to stores. Anytime you read 'sold to customer' numbers, someont is making numbers up.
Regaurdless, both PS3 and 360 sales are counted in the same way in this peice, and 360 is 1mil ahead.

What I can take from this is that Microsoft is finally making a dent in Playstation territory.
It might not win this generation there. But it's establishing a good Xbox base of customers.

Yes, considering that USA is the third largest market for games, whereas Europe is second largest -- Asia is the largest for those who can't work it out.

I know you're a hardcore gamer, and I know you own both consoles Fenix, so I'm putting the question to you:
If you could only afford one of the systems, Xbox 360, or Playstation 3, which would you choose?
You seem to know your stuff, and I've been seriously deliberating just selling my PS3 and picking up a Pro 360 so I can game online with my college buddies (none of whom own a PS3). I love gaming, but I can't really justify owning more than one of these systems at a time (both because I don't make much, and I still have to get good grades).

Turkey.. choose the console that all your friends have and has the majority of games that you want.
I chose the 360 because of those 2 reasons.. Also, if I could only choose one right now, it would still probably be the 360 due to the NXE..

From what I've tooled around with, the NXE is fantastic. The only thing that has kind of made me wary of the 360, is that I just don't know what big games are coming up in 2009. I've been following Sony's camp more, so do you know any exclusives coming in 2009 (honest question, not trolling)?
There are plenty of current and older 360 exclusives I'd get, but I have no clue what's on the horizon for the system.

Hang on. So sony claims they are ahead in the entire PAL territory and MS claim they are ahead in 5 out of 50 european countries? Any company can skew sales and facts to make them sound better, but only tell part of the story... this story is making out the 360 is doing better than it is.
Fact is with a year head start, 360 shouldn't be playing catch up.
People forget they should really be looking at multi-plat software sales for a true indication of how well each console is doing for GAMING. Many many people buy the ps3 for a blu ray player, as it is supposed to be one of the best. This is why in gaming the 360 is leading by a distance (see COD w@w sales).

Hard to understand why people buy the ps3. I think its a waste of money. Its become a blue ray player that also plays some sorts of games.
If you hade a vote asking if people buy it for blue ray or games then the blue ray side would win with huge numbers.i wont buy a blue ray player EVER! will turn to piracy for HD movies because i dont want to give Sony ANY OF MY MONEY! And one more thing.. MGS4 best graphics award at VGA??? Yeah some one got paid bigg cash.Maybe next time they should try a game before giving it a price.

Well, MGS4 got the best graphics because of the CGI stuff. Which is like a good portion of the game. It is a vague award anyway. They do not specify if it is best for gameplay graphics or for videos. I'm not surprised that MGS4 got it this year. Just wait until Final Fantasy comes out and they will get it next year

Sony has just lost their way. They had it perfect with ps2. Maybe they felt inferior because the xbox was more powerful, even though it didn't matter.
They just need to admit they've made the successor to the dreamcast, and not the ps2, and move on. It seems like they were more concerned with getting blu ray off the ground than making a game console. The ps3 is so difficult to work on that it takes too long to develope games for. Take Final Fantasy, we used to get a new one every holiday, the last one came out in what, 2005 or 6? And that was for ps2.
I love playstation. Ever since I got my first one with Resident Evil: Directors Cut and FFVII. I wish Sony would just move on already. It's time to scrap ps3. If they were sega, they would've had to get out of the console business by now.
I wonder if this will cause someone to lash out and cry.

As a PS3-only owner I agree with you. I'm seriously considering selling my PS3 for a pro 360 and a slim PS2. The NXE and the networking functions are so more integrated and so far beyond anything that Sony has yet to do its almost sad.
