Rare releases text enlarging Nuts & Bolts update

Without much of an announcement, Rare just released a Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts title update that fixes the game's smallest biggest problem, the small text. Yes sir, the Nuts & Bolts small dialog text issue has been resolved! After the title update is installed, a new "Large Dialogue Text Option" is available under the game display options on the main screen. Once this box is checked, the game's dialog text is embiggened. Or, if you're a purist, you can keep the small text by keeping the option unchecked. You can see the difference in text sizes in our nifty screen comparison gallery below. Thanks Rare!

It's about time.

Congrats to Dustin for starting the GOTY!!!
Roto13 @ Dec 20th 2008 1:52PM
Maybe game companies can stop doing this in the first place.
yolarrydabomb @ Dec 20th 2008 4:16PM
Yeah and they need to know that SOME PEOPLE still uses Standard TV's
like the text on gears of war 1.
Roto13 @ Dec 20th 2008 5:25PM
I think MOST people still use standard definition TVs.
Procris @ Dec 20th 2008 11:49PM
Can't really be mad now, at least Rare's patched it, unlike Capcom with Dead Rising. Which sold pretty damn well so its not like they had no reason to not support the game. But yeah, does seem a trend that a lot of games have small text on standard def TVs which honestly isn't acceptable.
Still kudos to Rare for doing the honourable thing and fixing it.

Mass Effect made my eyes bleed when I played it on a SD TV.
I'll never forget playing it on a proper TV with good resolution for the first time. "Those things are actually SYMBOLS!!!"
Ah well, it was a good push to get my ass a better TV...
Tony @ Dec 20th 2008 2:25PM
Excellent, thanks for the post. I love the game, but it does strain my eyes.
Cyber-Tyrant @ Dec 20th 2008 2:39PM
Perfect!
The small text somewhat hurts the eyes...
Tiptup300 @ Dec 20th 2008 2:43PM
I'm using HD and I'm still going to use this.
OptimumEDGE @ Dec 20th 2008 2:54PM
That's exactly what I was thinking as well. I have a HD television set as well, but the "large" text totally looks better than the smaller size regardless of HD or not.
This should've been the default size from the start. Ah well, good thing they fixed it up.
Gary Harwell @ Dec 20th 2008 3:11PM
I am going to pick up the game now. I decided to wait until they came out with this so I would get maximum enjoyment.
Seanross @ Dec 20th 2008 4:01PM
I played the demo and after 2-3 mins. I exited out because of the miniscule text. Thank God they fixed it.
there was no reason for me to be squinting at my 32" CRT Set from less than 5 feet away.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Dec 20th 2008 4:16PM
You should give it a try again, is an awesome game.
Anyone wants to play online? (or boost achievements) The game is almost empty and it is really good. The battle mode is a blast.
I have a 1800p HDTV so I didn’t have a problem with this but I hear that it is bad for smaller TV’s as Dead Rising text was in missions.
Pyrii @ Dec 20th 2008 4:17PM
Now they just need to fix the major game break bugs like CONSTANT FREEZING.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Dec 20th 2008 4:31PM
Funny Dead Rising, The Orange Box and this game have the same problems: Small text, freezing but all of them are my favorites games. Now that when Dead rising and TOB started to freeze MS had to replace my Xbaucks *gulp.
Arnon @ Dec 20th 2008 5:57PM
I haven't experienced anything of the sort.. Nor have I even heard of these glitches.
Pyrii @ Dec 20th 2008 6:06PM
When playing from the hard drive, it saves nearly every 5 seconds, and while it's doing so it can't stream off the hard drive so music stops, and the game sometimes freeze, it does then at the start of every challenge (even retries), when you collect anything and even just randomly. It's very infuriating as it breaks what i find as a very fun game, even if it's vehicle physics suck real bad and some tracks are really poorly designed.
Tony @ Dec 20th 2008 6:43PM
I play it entirely off the hard drive and I've never had that issue.
Tony @ Dec 20th 2008 6:44PM
I also would be surprised if Rare would do much about that unfortunately... It kind of seems like Bungie and Halo 3. The game wasn't designed for it and it's kind of as is. I'm sure they'd just tell people who have that issue to run it from the disc.
Who knows for sure, though.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Dec 20th 2008 4:21PM
This game is awesome I was listening to the music earlier and I watched the teaser again in youtube only to realize that reading youtube comments is like opening the Arc of the Dumbsh*ts ;it releases a huge wave of stupidity that just melts your face.
Nathan @ Dec 20th 2008 8:45PM
I must say, putting it as an option only make it better! Some people might want the larger text no matter what.
CyberKnight @ Dec 21st 2008 8:44PM
Agreed. Just because a hi-def screen *can* render a 6-point font doesn't mean it *should*.
The font size on my 36" 1080i tube is really hard on the eyes trying to read from my couch.
The NXE dashboard could use the same advice. >:(
Orange Juice @ Dec 20th 2008 8:45PM
Hey! Somebody should really add the entire debate over text size and this game on to the Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts wikipedia page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banjo-Kazooie:_Nuts_and_Bolts
The whole issue of text size and standard definition televisions is important and should be debated.
Dante @ Dec 20th 2008 11:32PM
Now...
If only they could do the same with DEAD RISING.
Procris @ Dec 20th 2008 11:54PM
Totally agree and its not as if Dead Rising sold poorly so it wouldn't have been worth their time. Now of course, its waaay to late now (not that they'd actually do it now, they even had a forum post on their official forums a few years ago saying they had no intention of fixing the small text issues.
Sadly Dead Rising was actually the first Xbox 360 game i played on my console but at the time i only owned a standard, small 14inch TV and the tiny text completely ruined the experience, so i got rid of the game quickly. I now have a HDTV but even so, i can't believe they never bothered to patch it for a game that did so well.
greg @ Dec 21st 2008 1:04AM
Awesome I can start playing this game. I put it away because I couldn't read the text. Now, I have Gears of War 2, so Nuts and Bolts might have to wait some more.
Patrick @ Dec 21st 2008 12:08PM
People, please find a way to get an HDTV. Playing current generation games (or even last generation games) on a standard TV is like having sex through cellophane wrap with all your clothes on.
greg @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:43AM
While it would be awesome to get a HDTV for people it just isn't viable or isn't viable until their current tv bites the dust. Not everyone has the money to drop on a nice tv. Even for people like me who have the money, don't have enough to waste it. So for some people, a HDTV will have to wait, plus current gen games still look amazing on SDTVs and its not all about the graphics.
Prox @ Dec 22nd 2008 8:26AM
Wow. I didn't know there was on option to change this back. I had no problem with the smaller text on my 46' 1080p LCD TV, so I actually didn't really like the idea of having larger text forced on me. Thanks for pointing out this (undocumented) option!
eP @ Dec 22nd 2008 12:36PM
THANK YOU GOD!!! I was getting terrible eye fatigue from trying to read the mission objectives and it cut my play time in half. Nuts & Bolts you are reborn anew!!!
chase @ Dec 30th 2008 2:01PM
someone help, i don't see this option. all i see is brightness and contrast
