Realtime Worlds: We'd be 'gutted' if MS gave Crackdown 2 to another developer
Talking to videogaming247, Realtime Worlds studio head Colin MacDonald addressed the recent Crackdown 2 rumors, specifically the fact that Ruffian Games was developing the sequel."Although to date we haven't had an offer from Microsoft for the Crackdown sequel rumoured, we continue to have ongoing discussions with them" admitted MacDonald adding that if Microsoft were to chose another studio to make the sequel, they'd want it done by "by an established, renowned developer that had the track record of delivering the quality gaming experience Crackdown players would demand." MacDonald confirmed that a handful of ex-Realtime employees have gone to Ruffian, but that the majority of the team remains and also made it clear that they doubt MS would chose a "startup on RTW's doorstep" (Ruffian) to develop Crackdown 2.
Stil no Crackdown 2 rumor busting or confirmation, but this is turning into a developer soap opera. How entertaining.

Crackdown is one of those games that i think really surprised people at just how good it turned out to be.
Like many people, originally the only reason i bought the game was to get into the Halo 3 beta (turned out i got into the Friends and Family invite same as the guy below through B.net), but after playing the game i soon realised that it was fantastic in its own right and pretty much everyone i know agrees.
Sure there was pretty much no story but the powers your agent had, throwing cars, jumping buildings, co-op! and the morphing agent cars was all fantastic and most importantly, it was fun. The orb hunting was also a nice idea, although admittedly i got stuck on just 1 damn orb that i still can't find anywhere which sucks for me :P.
If any game deserved a sequel, it should be Crackdown and i'm honestly disappointed its not already in development, as Real Time Worlds has always seemed like they really enjoyed working on it and wanted to do another.
Considering they [RTWs] are working on that MMO now, i really doubt they'd have time to work on Crackdown 2 any time soon. Obviously the comments they dropped suggests they don't want Ruffian developing it but realistically, if RTWs aren't in a position to develop it themselves, who else is?
Anyway, Bring on Crackdown 2 i say! Bigger and better than the first, maybe with some actual enemy agents this time to fight against.
glpee @ Dec 20th 2008 12:36PM
crackdown wasnt a super great title. it was fun but compare that to something like gears of war 2 and its not even on the same level
Bushman311 @ Dec 20th 2008 12:55PM
Maybe it was just me, but I had far more fun playing Crackdown than GoW2
SadisticHam @ Dec 20th 2008 1:10PM
The key difference between the two is ones a laggy buggy crap online experience and the other is not.
glpee @ Dec 20th 2008 1:23PM
Bushman i respect your opinion but from a business standpoint gears sold much much much better as well.
Sadisticham - laggy? i didnt care for the online since i am playing call of duty but when i did play the online i never once had lag in the experience. everyone is entitled to their own opinion dont get offended but the truth of the matter is gears made much more money. it got a higher score review at every site, and the majority of people know its the better game. crackdown was nothing more than a solid title.
ice~ @ Dec 20th 2008 1:28PM
Just cause a game sold well or the critics say so doesn't mean it's good. Not saying Gears of War 2 isn't...but i enjoyed Crackdown far more than Gears 2 (which by the way is a lagfest u should play more). And Crackdown is more than a solid game, it's fucking amazing! The critics could go fuck themselves
mgsrocks1 @ Dec 20th 2008 1:56PM
Gears and Crackdown are not the same type of games. If you want to compare Crackdown to something, compare it to GTAIV and Saints Row.
NOOK @ Dec 20th 2008 3:25PM
I have to say that I think Crackdown sucked. My brother loves it though but I wouldn't play it for one more minute.
offday @ Dec 20th 2008 3:54PM
Game sales don't mean anything. Look at Madden. Crappy game and good sales.
Nathan-DTS @ Dec 22nd 2008 3:34PM
@NOOK In my PS3 inclined, biased opinion, Crackdown is a great game (1 of the 4 on my list of 360 exclusives that I envy (the others being Mass Effect, Gears 1, and Left 4 Dead))Crackdowns wouldn't allow me to leave, I just kept saying to myself '1 more gang person and then off to bed' over and over and over again.
Vcize @ Dec 21st 2008 1:27AM
As one of the biggest Gears of War 1 fans on the planet, Crackdown was far superior to Gears of War 2.
mattclarkie @ Dec 20th 2008 12:35PM
Everyone I speak to, and myself, believe Crackdown was a truly great game. I hope a sequel as good as Crackdown is made, and hopefully RTW produce it.
And maybe they could reduce the length of the startup. Man it took ages to actually start playing Crackdown.
NightShade15 @ Dec 20th 2008 10:32PM
Yeah, I bought Crack Down for the game. I was invited to the Family and Friends program through Bungie to get the Halo 3 Beta a week early anyways. So I was playing Both Crack Down and Halo 3 Beta. I maxed out my character and thought that the game was amazing. The DLC that came out for the game was also pretty damn fun. Harpoon gun FTW.
JerkfacedFed @ Dec 20th 2008 12:50PM
include halo 4 beta and its sold
ice~ @ Dec 20th 2008 1:28PM
So you wouldn't buy it without a free beta is what your saying?
iNNeR_KaoS @ Dec 20th 2008 1:51PM
I remember back when they said something along the lines of "We wanted to make it, but Microsoft was too slow, so we've moved on."
Neuromancer @ Dec 20th 2008 6:08PM
I remember that, I also remember someone at Real Time Worlds saying they regretted not immediately starting on Crackdown 2. I don't think they realized the 1st one was going to be as successful as it was.
LegendaryRedass @ Dec 20th 2008 3:32PM
When you say "lagfest", are you refering to the matchmaking? Sometimes I'll notice an extended wait during matchmaking, but only sometimes. As far as actual online gameplay, it has always run like butter. Maybe it's just differences in our networks. Of course, it had better run like butter at 20 megs.
Neuromancer @ Dec 20th 2008 6:12PM
I hope Real Time Worlds does end up doing the sequel, that's the best chance for it being just as good if not better than the 1st.
The only thing I would add would be the ability to arrest the top bad guys ala Mercenaries instead of assassinating them, I think that would fit in more with the law enforcement theme.
Boff @ Dec 23rd 2008 7:25AM
Don't you remember the story? Your boss (the voice) tells you why you were running round killing all the 'enemies'.
(Don't want to spoil it for anyone)
myabsolution @ Dec 20th 2008 6:27PM
I got crackdown used for 5 dollars last boxing day (dec.26th)
best 5 dollars ever spent.
Game is well worth full 60, not to mention I will definately buy the sequel first day of release.
Heres to hoping for 4 player Co-Op!
dylan @ Dec 20th 2008 8:06PM
4 player co-op would be amazing, more jumpy shooty please!
Vcize @ Dec 21st 2008 1:29AM
So how about you guys, I dunno, start actually MAKING it instead of complaining that someone else is making it rather than it just sitting there doing nothing.
I know they're busy working on a new IP, but hell if any current-gen game on the planet deserves a sequel it's Crackdown.
AJ @ Dec 22nd 2008 8:00AM
EXACTLY!! Stop whining and tell MS you have a team ready to start work on CD2 right now. MS does not want to wait for you to get done what you are working on right now, so you have to show them that you can assemble a team to work on this now. Step Up RTW!
Boff @ Dec 23rd 2008 7:29AM
RTW got the DLC spot on too. The new weapons were a nice touch and a lot of fun. But the most fun was that awesome little dune buggy. Damn!! We'd spend hours seeing who could drive the furthest up the cliff face!
