Merry Christmas!!!
I have a quick question regarding Lips. I bought the American (English) version and my wife and sister have been enjoying it a lot. (Sometimes, I don't have time to play L4D.) Anyways, both of them are bilingual like myself and I know that they would love to sing some songs in spanish as well. Where can I order it in spanish? I have checked an auction site and can't find it. Any ideas? Should I contact Microsoft? And I only want the game, no mics. Is that possible? Thanks for your help!
GT: Latin Trident.
We managed to find the Spanish version of Lips at Best Buy and Amazon. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not sell the game without the microphones and there are no indications that the company plans to do so anytime soon. So, it looks like you're stuck paying full price and you'll have another two mics on your hands. Who knows though, once the Lips microphone patch hits Rock Band, you might be able to get some money back by selling your extra mics on eBay. Either that or you'll have some handy spares if one of them breaks.
Why does Microsoft only allow you to transfer your licenses once every 12 months? I called customer support and their answer was piracy. I do not wear an eye patch nor is my name Jack Sparrow, so I am not a pirate. If they don't want to get rid of DRM, at least give me a system like the PS3 or iTunes where I can activate 5 systems. I lost my Castle Crashers data because my new console does not have the rights to play my game. Maybe the Major or Trixie can help?
The long and the short of it is that you're stuck. For whatever reason, be it piracy, profit or otherwise, Microsoft will not allow users to keep their content on more than one console. Unfortunately, there's nothing to be done about the licenses transfer process. You'll have to wait the twelve months until you're allowed to transfer your licenses again. However, you should still be able to play your Xbox Live Arcade games and access your downloaded content as long as your signed into Xbox Live. Unless your actual save game data is on another console, it should still be accessible.
We all know GTA IV took GOTY at Spike's VGA.
But, what you guys at X3F name Game of the Year?
Patience, dear fanboy. We will be revealing our choices for the best games of 2008 very soon. Keep an eye out for them next week. For what it's worth, none of us are likely to pick GTAIV.
How long does it take for a data migration kit to get from microsoft to my doorstep? i faxed the order form 3 weeks ago to switch my files from my 20gb hdd to my 120 gb hdd from my elite i had to buy when my pro finally quit. i have been hearing 2 weeks from my friends and i know microsoft has speedy service, so i am worried that mine has been left by the wayside. just looking for a little reissurance or perhaps someone with an idea of what i should do.
We have no actual experience ordering the migration kit, but three weeks seems like an awfully long time. We'd say it's time to call Microsoft and see what's up. Call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX and see if you can't figure out the status of your order (it might be difficult since Microsoft doesn't give any sort of order number). If you don't have any luck with that, you might consider asking customer support to send you one. Make sure you get some kind of reference number in case you have to call back.
Hey Xbox 360 Fanboy, I was wondering:
What is it with the lack of games on the Xbox 360 with offline split-screen? I have a twin brother at home, and it really bothers me that a good portion of games on the Xbox 360 that you would THINK have split-screen doesn't. Case in point: GRID, Flatout: Ultimate Carnage, Battlefield: Bad Company, etc. It's really sad to see that while there's online multiplayer, offline multiplayer is no where to be found in these games. I mean, is it really that hard to make an offline, split-screen multiplayer mode? If Halo 3 can do it, other developers can. It's just that most developers are too lazy to even think about those at home having friends, I guess. I guess the Xbox 360 is for those who have no friends due to the vast majority of games out there having only online multiplayer and no offline multiplayer. Games like Halo 3 and Gears of War prove that developers still care about classic split-screen/co-op gameplay. Are developers not caring anymore about the experience of playing together on one console, and rather you play alone with a bunch of strangers on the net? It couldn't be due to the advanced graphics of the Xbox 360 and the PS3. I find this trend very disappointing, and I hope it reverses soon, because it's getting harder and harder to find good games that my brother and I can play at the same time, at least on the Xbox 360, and the PS3 to an extent as well.
Thanks,
Skylar (Atlanta, GA)
This is a question we've considered many times. Obviously, we don't have one universal answer as to why certain games don't have offline multiplayer, but we'd guess it all comes down to development choices. More specifically, it probably comes down to time and money. Of course, one thing to remember with split screen games is that you're essentially duplicating all the geometry in the game up to four times. This is pretty taxing on resources, which means it's more difficult to do splitscreen in games with complex geometry. Again though, it's probably more likely that developers just don't have the time or money to implement splitscreen modes.
There are still plenty of games that do offer splitscreen modes though, and with the recent resurgence of co-op gameplay (Left 4 Dead, which has splitscreen, by the way), hopefully more developers will realize that nothing tops playing on the same couch with friends.
Hey guys thanks for helping me with my steam/firefox issue.
Anyhow, I just picked up a 60GB hard drive to replace my current 20GB I was wondering if their was an easier way then getting a memory card and manuely transfering each game save and arcade game. I do have one idea though, my buddy bought an elite a while back and I learned about the offer for the free transfer cable. You need an old console serial number and your current elite xbox's serial as part of the info to get the cable. I got a first gen xbox 360 that gave out a few months ago (I have a zombie console from microsoft) and I was wondering if the box as a serial number I could use to get the free cable? Or is that just illegal on my part somehow?
Thanks again guys
A.J. aka. Dizez66
We've actually been asking Microsoft about this issue for some time. We just discovered today, in fact, that the newer data migration kits will actually work with the 60GB hard drive. Older ones, apparently, are only made for the 120GB drive. Concerning your specific issue, the best advice we can give is to call up Microsoft customer support and request a data migration kit from them. Microsoft's mail-in order form really wasn't designed with this in mind and, frankly, we're still mystified by the fact that the 60GB hard drive doesn't include a data migration kit in the first place. It seems like a no-brainer that users will need to transfer their data when upgrading hard drives, and using a Memory Unit is a less than optimal solution. Anywho, yeah, we say call Microsoft.
another one for you this week...
Does the 360 upconvert standard DVDs to 1080p through HDMI? I found the following that says DVDs on the 360 are upconverted to 1080p through VGA and 480p through component but this link is two years old and prior to HDMI. Can you break down the current upconversion specs for standard DVDs for each 360 output - HDMI, compnent, VGA? Is there is any difference if you are playing the DVD in the HD-DVD add-on drive or the 360 drive itself (assuming there isn't)?
Thanks,
DW
We're almost positive that the 360 will upscale DVDs to 1080p via HDMI. VGA will upscale DVDs to 1080p as well (so long as your television can handle 1080p, of course). Component cables can only upscale DVDs to 480p. The resolutions supported by the HD DVD player via each connection type are exactly the same. In other words, using the HD DVD player won't give you any upscaling advantages.
That's it for this week, folks. Keep sending your questions to: ask [att] xbox360fanboy [dawt] com.

The disappearance of split screen bothers me as well. Although I'm really glad that L4D has split screen, I was really irked that it didn't offer a four player split screen. I think L4D would have been PERFECT for four friends to play together on the same screen.
ice~ @ Dec 23rd 2008 6:42PM
YEA i was so pissed there was no 4p split screen...that defeats the purpose of the game...however split screen really makes the frame rate drop and everything gets more jagged edges and stuff....
Premature ejaculation man @ Dec 23rd 2008 8:04PM
It always saddens me that splitscreen gets the shaft.
Not all my friends can afford their own 360 and the games we play and its usually great fun to have everyone in the same room going nuts.
Then of course with some games, each of us need an Xbox, Xbox LIVE account, TV, the game for each of us to be able to play in the same fucking room.
VENOM @ Dec 24th 2008 12:04AM
I was heartbroken when splitscreen multiplayer wasn't included in Duke Nukem 3D. A kickass game with a ton of bells and whistles added...but sadly no splitscreen...
mattclarkie @ Dec 24th 2008 6:03AM
PDZ has brilliant split-screen. It would be good if more games did.

Here's every Co-Op game with SplitScreen on the platform: http://www.co-optimus.com/search.php?advanced=true&system=1&release=Y&local=Y&split=Y&sortby=relevance

My buddy and I really enjoy the split screen of Call of Duty:World At War. What really sucks is that you have to beat it single player in order to unlock the Nazi Zombie mode. And the fact that they removed some of the missions for split screen.
slycooper_rocker [anti-panda death murder squadron force five] @ Dec 23rd 2008 11:11PM
you could just go to the credits and leave your 360 on until they're over. it's a heck of a lot faster if you got it for nazi zombies.
Taylor @ Dec 23rd 2008 7:01PM
The game im really ticked at is Call of Duty. I mean playin with my buddy on the couch, ONLINE, was a hoot, because I always pwn him, but online we worked really good together. But now, its either halo or gears, but COD is both our favorite games! so please release more split screen ONLINE games. plz.

You CAN use the mail order form to request a XBox 360 Migration Kit. Simply write down "on order" on the form where it asks for the new XBox serial number. Credit goes to http://www.amazon.com/review/R1JEQUXQTJAZ5F/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

what's wrong with GTA4 getting game of the year??? i thought it was one of the best games that came out this year and deserve's the Spike GOTY award
myabsolution @ Dec 23rd 2008 8:05PM
Because it was just GTA3 with HD graphics.
All the new fun vehicles and weapons added in from the previous generations GTA games were removed...
Even the missions were same old same old.
If anything, Saint's Row 2 is way better aka FUN. And yet GTA4 scored an unbelievably ludicrous score of 98 on metacritic.
I was most pleased when Adam Sessler (of that tv show i forgot name to) gave GOTY to Fable 2 and not GTA4 like everyone else.
Erik Stroud @ Dec 23rd 2008 11:31PM
I hated GTA 4 too. It just wasn't fun. I used to like GTA back when I was younger. But now, I like RPGs, FPSs, and RTSs more.
schwal @ Dec 23rd 2008 11:47PM
That annoyed me even more. I agree that GTA4 deserves GoTY. But even more I think Fable 2 doesn't. I think it's just getting them because it's more recent. And I have beaten both(Gamertag is schwal).
In order, GTA4, Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, Braid, Rock Band 2, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2, Left 4 Dead, and Rez HD all got higher Metacritic scores than Fable 2.
DBoyFlex @ Dec 23rd 2008 7:26PM
Even though you can only upscale using the HDMI and VGA connections, movies still look a ton better using component on an HD TV compared to a standard def tele. However, if you can use HDMI, use HDMI. If not, you still shouldn't be disappointed with Component, and if you are, then the xbox is only a mediocre upconverter anyways. I like the looks of movies on my HDTV with HDMI hookups. Good enough to keep me from ever buying a blu ray player.
Delgado @ Dec 23rd 2008 8:51PM
For a slightly OT addition to your post, when they say "using the HD DVD player won't give you any upscaling advantages," they're right - BUT, you're less likely to wear out your Xbox's DVD drive if you use the HDDVD addon. The 360's disc drive can crap out if you use it too much.
Jayslacks @ Dec 23rd 2008 9:52PM
I agree about the HD DvD part. But, and this might be me, I swear movies look better in the HD DVD player. But that might be me keeping the HD-DVD fires burning. Remember the HD wars? Man, that was awesome. Not really.
Erik Stroud @ Dec 23rd 2008 11:29PM
I still would go with HDMI over Component. To bad I have an older 360 without HDMI. But, I guess that's what my PS3 is for.
Jonman @ Dec 23rd 2008 8:00PM
Another vote for more splitscreen. My guess is that the ubiquity of Live has made developers lazy. Back in the day, when splitscreen was the only kind of multiplayer, it was included de-facto.

I have a friend who doesn't spend a lot of time reading gaming news. Also, being a recently-graduated student, he doesn't have a huge gaming budget. (Not that I'm exactly rolling in the dough either.) So most of his new gaming experiences come from friends like me coming over with a game to try.
It's a much better experience all around to play *with* than to take turns sitting and watching.
While that's true in any case, in this case it can make or break a sale.

"Another vote for more splitscreen. My guess is that the ubiquity of Live has made developers lazy. Back in the day, when splitscreen was the only kind of multiplayer, it was included de-facto."
Developers lazy? I don't think it would be easy to focus on something (splitscreen) at the expense of others (online, single player mode/missions). When you consider how much time and money going into games nowadays so everything must be cohesive (single, split, online) as a product. Many developers/publishers don't want to water down a product to work for a shrinking fanbase and that's of course the splitscreen crowd. I can't imagine a game selling well nowadays with broken online multi but has great splitscreen.
We all love to be reminded of GoldenEye 4-player...but why did we really like it? Because we didn't know it could get better. Look, alot of people that were hooked on Halo/GoldenEye only played those games, had s*** tv's, were constantly broke thus played all the time, etc. I don't miss those days. Some think by playing GoldenEye they will find the game has gotten better...no, it's gotten worse.
Would I have loved Crackdown co-op splitscreen? Of course. But I'd rather them focus on something I'll use alot more often then something that may be little more than a throwback to the "good ol' days".
mernmern @ Dec 23rd 2008 8:57PM
Personally, I love split screen. I had a buddy over last week and we ran both L4D and GoW2. These games did it correctly. However, Halo 3 did not. I find it hard to even offer it as a worthy suggestion. Bungie crimped the screen size for split screen which made it frustrating to play.
bigd7387 @ Dec 23rd 2008 9:05PM
Ok the guy is complaining about not being a pirate so he wants an authorizing system like the PS3 for his downloaded content. I've got news for him, Sony changed the policy to only being able to authorize 1 system for content and not 5 like they had prior. Plus the new restrictions that Sony has put on the DLC is worse than what MS used to have. Just the fact that I can still get my DLC back, even only once a year is fine by me. Go cry elsewhere buddy.
thedarkvault @ Dec 23rd 2008 11:09PM
here's a split screen question.
What's with the f'd up 2 player split screen in call of duty world at war?
Playing on my buddy's 4:3 SD tv was ridiculous, the screens don't take up the full half of the screen, they take up a 16:9 portion of the top half or bottom half, and beside them is an irrelevant graphic of a gun. Who cares if it makes your POV a bit wider or cropped a bit shorter? Just give us half the screen. It's better than losing the res by framing the game ala sega CD.
Drachen77 @ Dec 24th 2008 12:11AM
My 360 is in the same boat with the licenses. I had to transfer them when my old box died but I hadn't been able to migrate my data yet to the new hard drive. So now I can only play Arcade games when connected to Live which sucks in Germany because the internet goes down about once a day.
Also I want to reassure the guy about the migration kit. Mine took a little over a month to get to me. I live in Germany and things usually take slightly longer to get here but it was processed promptly and sent out. I'm sure it will get to him soon.
Mike @ Dec 24th 2008 12:16AM
I bought a 60GB drive to upgrade my Pro and called 1-800-4-MY-XBOX to ask about ordering a migration kit. The guy had no idea what a migration kit was. I insisted that they were real, so he put me on hold to ask his manager.
When he got back, he informed me that I couldn't order a kit because Microsoft does not sell the 60GB drive by itself. Instead of explaining the $99, drive+Live package, I hung up and spent the next hour moving everything over with a memory card. Doesn't Microsoft train these guys?
d889 @ Dec 24th 2008 12:39AM
one of the main reasons is because the framerate would be terrible if the console had to render the image 2 or even 4 times.
thats why halo is 640p or whatever, hell i dont care it looks great on my 54" hdtv, but thats why it can handle coop (and i notice fps drops sometimes online)
if lots of games toned down the resolution to allow split screen people would bitch and moan that it doesnt look good enough.
sjs2626 @ Dec 24th 2008 12:56AM
"I can't imagine a game selling well nowadays with broken online multi but has great splitscreen."
Does Gears of War 2 ring a bell?
Dizez66 @ Dec 24th 2008 2:30PM
Thanks again you guys. I called support and after only 10 min on the line I was told it would take a week to get here free of charge. Thanks again for the info you guys are the best
sho220 @ Dec 24th 2008 5:29AM
i don't miss splitscreen and have no wish for it to return. splitscreen was good before there was onilne. i can't stand sharing the screen anymore in FPS games. it just isn't the same experience. if my friends want to play, i let them. i can play my 360 anytime i want so, my friends can run wild. honestly though, what needs to happen is dual output. i have more than 1 screen in my house whether it's a tv or monitor. a console should have two outputs for 2 player experience in an FPS. of course, this probably won't happen for many generations to come but, that is the future of local multiplayer. sharing the screen is evil!
AJ @ Dec 24th 2008 8:44AM
The 360 upconverts awesomely. DVD's look noticably better. It only works through the digital connections. So HDMI and VGA are the only ones that get the upscaling functionality. Component only gets progressive scanning.
wheeler328 @ Dec 24th 2008 8:54AM
I just ordered a Migration Kit recently by faxing the form and I received it about a week later. I was pretty surprised how fast it came, especially since there was no confirmation that they even received my order. If support doesn't help you, how about just faxing the form or mailing it in again? If they receive a duplicate, the worst they'll do is deny it.
dbellinger @ Dec 24th 2008 8:58AM
I had a similar problem with the migration kit. I had to request it THREE TIMES! I faxed the first two requests then called the 800 number. I finally got one about a week after I called. Then another one the day after that. And another the following weekend. Total time to receive a kit from the first request was approximately 1.5 - 2 months. It may be possible they ship them in waves. Not a good idea since people want to use their 120s when they get them.
Gemini Ace @ Dec 24th 2008 10:59AM
Left 4 Dead not having 4 player split screen is a complete deal breaker.
And don't say that it has split screen because unless it's 4 player, it doesn't count.
halongw77 @ Dec 24th 2008 1:56PM
Halo 3 has the best split-screen by far. You can have another player in campaign with you, you can have 3 other players in Forge, custom games, etc.
The best split-screen support for Xbox.
Redeye @ Dec 26th 2008 10:14PM
I just got Blazing Angels II from my kids for Christmas and we are having a lot of fun in the co-op mode (2-player only). If you like flying games, I can easily recommend it for the $20 that it costs nowdays.
Redeye @ Dec 26th 2008 10:20PM
To correct my own comment: you can play 4-player co-op.
Also I really enjoy playing Age of Booty split-screen. It's simple and fun, but keeps the tension up.
