If you went back to the Xbox-era and told our past selves that the role-playing genre on the next Xbox would be as impressive as almost any other genre we'd laugh. Then we'd punch you in the jugular for lying (kidding!). But seriously, 2008 brought with a variety of fantastic role-playing games from both the East and the West. With games like Final Fantasy XIII on the horizon the Xbox 360 is solidifying itself as a must-own console for RPG aficionados. Here are the nominees for Best Role-Playing Game of the Year.
I would have to vote Lost Odyssey. I have both this and Fable. Lost odyssey has made me laugh and cry on many occasions and the gameplay is just superb. Fable on the other hand... I can't even get past the tutorial because the game keeps freezing. Death to Fable. I demand you -2 from the Fable vote count in my honor!
Again my got has to go to fallout 3. Not only is this goty, it's also rpgoty. Lost Odyssey is a solid runner up. And glitch... err I mean Fable 2 gets a well deserved 3rd place.
I torn between Fable 2 and Lost Odyssey. Fable 2, I had so much fun with and it was happy and enjoyable every step of the way. Sure, some things weren't so "happy" but it had a great atmosphere to it all the way through.
Lost Odyssey, was just an absolute epic adventure. I fell in love with the dream stories and I thought that added such an amazing difference compared to other RPGs.
Its hard for me to choose just one though, as on an RPG level, they really are quite different. They both have things that are just great about them.
From the looks of these comments I need to get back into Lost Odyssey, I was renting it a while back and enjoyed it, saw it on offer for a tenner, bought it and never played it =(
Seeing as I have only played Lost Odyssey, I cast my vote for that. Kaim, Seth, Ming, Jansen, Sarah, Cooke, Mack, Tolten, & Sed. What a crew! Hironobu Sakaguchi knows how make an RPG. Lost Odyssey was great! It was very overlooked this year.

Lost Odyssey hands down best JRPG and RPG this generation so far... imo
Production values, graphics, clean interface, complete soundtrack are all excellent.
Couple that with the classic turn based combat (with few tweaks) and one amazingly epic story, as well the 1000 years of dreams...
Fable 2 would be my CLOSE runner up.

I've never played Lost Odyssey but not into JRPG's therefore never took my interest.
Fallout 3 wins it for me. I've spent hours in the game and still yet to finish it all (including all the side quests).
Fable 2 was a huge let down imo. Too much hype and bullshit from Molyneux.
