Grab a hanky, 'Cry On' canceled
The Xbox 360 has no shortage of role-playing games these days but the Western console has just lost a promised Japanese release. On Christmas Day, AQ Interactive revealed Cry On, the action role-playing game from character designer Kimihiko Fujisaka, has been canceled due to, "the current market environment and forecasts for the future."
A joint venture between Cavia and Hironobu Sakaguchi's Mistwalker, Cry On would have been the third title from the famed Japanese creator; Mistwalker previously worked on Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. A representative for AQ Interactive told 1UP that the studio "deeply apologize[s] for troubling those who were awaiting its release." No screen shots of the game had ever been released since the game had first been announced in 2005. Down and out for now, but something tells us Sakaguchi isn't hanging up the gloves anytime soon.

Already read this on Kotaku. Really depressing news, I was -really- looking forward to this one. -_-

Gutted.. been waiting for Cry On for ages now..
I'm sure U read that Mistwalker had two other projects on the cards, one being an MMO..

Yeah, I was waiting for this. I still haven't beaten the RPGs I have, even though I want more. So the consolation is I'm one of 10 people who haven't beaten Oblivion (I bought it ages ago, but was more interested in Zuma [it's crack I tell you]), Enchanted Arms, Eternal Sonata, Infinite Undiscovery, and Lost Odyssey. I also haven't finished my evil playthrough in Mass Effect.
And I still haven't played Fable II, Fallout 3, or Last Remnant (for better or worse) with Star Ocean and Street Fighter IV around the corner.
I guess I'm greedy. A little off topic, but I have been enjoying Conan. Not bad as a $10 diversion. Thanks Circuit City!

Does anyone know how well Tales of Vesperia has been selling? I feel guilty I bought it used for $30, because the game is awesome and needs all the support it can get. I hope 360 newcomers pick up some of the overlooked gems so they get new life.

JRPGs have been the biggest victim of this console war. The 360 doesn't have a large enough install base within Japan to support these games, but the PS3 isn't doing well worldwide. It's so bad that some JRPGs are turning to the Wii (e.g. Fragile http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/12/26/fragile-videos-are-awesomely-heartbreaking/) It's really messed up for gamers who aren't into FPSs.
Kia @ Dec 27th 2008 6:26PM
That's hardly a bad thing. Arc Rise Fantasia looks good, and Fragile is absolutely -stunning-.

I need more JRPG... Lost Odyssey was great, I'm sad to hear this won't be coming out

Same here. Unfortunately, the large-scale, high-quality-production JRPGs that we are so used to can't be afforded the risk of low sales in this crappy economy.
Deck @ Dec 27th 2008 7:31PM
Admittedly I didn't know too much about it. So I can't I was already looking forward to it. Though I love RPGs so seeing one cancelled that seemed to have promise, is a sad event. :-/
Hopefully we'll get an announcement on some more RPGs in 2009 to make up for it!

JRPG's just haven't been what they used to be.
Compare the western RPG ratings/quality to all of the recent JRPG's that have come out.
They really need to kick it up a notch and produce some sort of excellent game to breath life back into the genre.
I mean really, Fallout 3 or Fable II or even Oblivion have been significantly better than all of the JRPG's available on the 360.

I have to disagree. Nothing I see of Fallout or Oblivion makes me nearly as impressed as I felt when looking at similiar promos for Lost Odyssey or even Tales of Vesperia.
Fable 2 culminated in one of the worse laid out stories I've ever seen in a game. The ending ruined the entire game for me, and the lack of any REALLY impressive items/weapons is severely under the quality of even the worse "JRPG".
Lost Odyssey has been very good all the way through. It's characters are all well fleshed out. Save for maybe Mass Effect and other Bioware fare, I still have yet to find characters as interesting in western RPGs as in things like Lost Odyssey or, say, Eternal Sonata.
I do agree with the fact that we need a JRPG that has more wide range, mass appeal (though I dislike thinking about what would be done to reach those audiences), but what has been released so far has great quality, and most don't deserve all the poor treatment they get.

meh I against JRPG and Anime so this wont hurt me.
