BioShock franchise has 'potential' for five sequels
Talking about the potential for future sequels, Hartmann says that "if we spin it the right way and get the right twist of innovation, we can make six parts of it, as Star Wars did." Something that Star Wars did do, but video games are a bit different and as much as Hartmann wants to compare BioShock to Star Wars, it's clear to us that BioShock is its own beast. Just be careful 2K. Just be careful.

I think that it is a bit too early talking about 5 more sequels.
Doll @ Jan 7th 2009 3:12PM
I agree with you. They should take it as it comes instead of stating there will be 5 and dragging it out while people lose interest cause the storyline gets all mushy.
offday @ Jan 8th 2009 12:10AM
Agreed.
And I don't think it's even possible to have 5 sequels and not make them to just cash in.

The only reason I never got Bioshock was because the demo got boring after a few replays. I mean it would have been fun for a while but it has nothing to offer beyond the story.
I couldn't even imagine trying to play six different Bioshock games. It'd be like the Madden of creepy/awkward games.
Neuromancer @ Jan 7th 2009 3:46PM
The demo is like 1/100th of the whole game, that's kind of a lame reason not to get the full game. No offense.
xenocidic @ Jan 7th 2009 3:48PM
god forbid a solid storyline be a game's prime selling feature !
EdgeOne @ Jan 8th 2009 12:05AM
You didn't miss anything. I bought it, got so far, and then lost interest. It was an artistic/technical milestone for the 360 but it seemed like a game for dysfunctional 13 yr olds. Games are suppose to be entertaining... this was just creepy-depressing. Even hard-fought victories were strangely unrewarding. But to each their own.
hrolf @ Jan 7th 2009 3:26PM
I'm still trying to figure out how they're doing the sequel in the first place, the ending, at least to me, didn't really leave it open.
It was allot of fun, and a great atmospheric game but 6 games?
Lol and if they add some stupid Jamaican sounding fish thing, they wont be getting MY money!
myabsolution @ Jan 7th 2009 3:26PM
Game should just end at first bioshock.
There is no more story and it will just ruin what was already established.
Some good IPs need to end at the first game.
Neuromancer @ Jan 7th 2009 3:47PM
I agree, Bioshock is one of those games that was so great I don't need to play a sequel.
OTAM @ Jan 7th 2009 5:51PM
Dear lord I can't agree with you more. Bioshock and Dead Rising were 2 new IPs that should have ended at the first game if you ask me (not because they were bad either).
xenocidic @ Jan 7th 2009 3:47PM
I think 5 sequels would leave the cow awful sore
Jonman @ Jan 7th 2009 4:08PM
5? Is that all? What about spinoffs? Talk about missing a trick.
Little Sisterz: a fashion design game aimed at 7 year old girls featuring the delightfully glowy-eyed freaks as models.
Big Daddy in Little China: a platformer featuring Kirk Douglass fleeing from lumbering enemies in Victorian diving suits. Set in Chinatown, obviously.
Would You Kindly: a Dungeon Master clone - you play Andrew Ryan and command your brainwashed minions around Rapture.
Atlas Shrugged: an arthouse game in which you play Atlas, and have no idea what to do, or what's going on.
Game companies need to hire me as an ideas man, I tells ya.
coffee @ Jan 7th 2009 5:13PM
I'd buy Big Daddy in Little China

(Kurt Russell, by the way)

The Elder Scrolls? That's Star Wars. Bioshock? That's... Starship Troopers. :\
perseus109 @ Jan 7th 2009 10:55PM
Starship Troupers? GREAT book, OK movie. It is all about implementation... That goes for Bioshock too. I would love to go back to the founding and play it as and adventure / mystery that turns into a shooter as things go south.
cquigley @ Jan 7th 2009 5:24PM
Bioshock is def a game that was good enough that I would want to play and sequel that they come out with. I feel like the first story was so amazing that they'll be able to bring so much more to the table in the next iteration. Six may be a bit much but to not bring out another would be crazy.
luffy @ Jan 7th 2009 6:16PM
hmmm how come youguys don't say shit about final fantasy huh? that shit got more than 10 games line up.. and still ppl play.. so why not bioshock.. that rapture city is so huge, sure they could extand the storyline. maybe there is anothere submerge city we don't know about... make it happen 2k.. bioshock is the shit.. (you must have HDtv to fully take advantage of the game)
cquigley @ Jan 7th 2009 6:47PM
Nobody says anything about FF cuz it's always a different game, not the same place, characters or anything. Except X-2
pibs @ Jan 7th 2009 6:01PM
I still think Bioshock 2 should of been a sequel and not a prequel. Going outside to wreck havoc on the land walkers!
ChocoDK @ Jan 7th 2009 6:38PM
To be perfectly honest I was suprised when 2K announced a Bioshock 2. I thought the ending was the ending of the story and that was it. I can't really see anywhere else where they could possibly take the story to.
Spoilers:
Either the Little Sisters were saved and lead peaceful lives or humans found out about Rapture and really what is there to say about that.
With that being said I don't understand how they could make five more titles for the series.
UK31337 @ Jan 7th 2009 7:33PM
I didn't like Bioshock in any case but to see it potentially get milked dry like this is really ridiculous. The story on the first one wasn't even as good as people like to think, I mean I've read better books and seen better films.
I think the sequel was originally a knee-jerk reaction to the accidental success of the original, but now they're just taking it too far.
KrAzy Che3To @ Jan 7th 2009 8:53PM
Alright, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just reading around on Wikipedia and here's what I found.
System Shock 1 + 2 and Bioshock = 3 games
System Shock 3 is apparently in the works and so is Bioshock 2 so doesn't that make 5 right there?
ChomskyKnows @ Jan 7th 2009 10:50PM
BIOSHOCK 4: THE RETURN OF SUCHONG!!!!
THIS VERY GOOD FOR SUCHONG!!!
Pel @ Jan 8th 2009 6:46AM
Bioshock 2 will be both a prequel AND a sequel.
We will get to see how the demise of Rapture plays out in flashback form through the dreams of little sisters (now all grown up and living in cities on "dry land")
We will also get a chance to revisit the tainted dystopia, as the pull of Rapture is too great for them to ignore.
The Big Daddy's search the halls for the little sisters, wailing and moaning night after night and due to the macabre connection these two characters share, both feel the subconcious desire to be together once more.
So...the little sisters...along with a group of explorers and grave robbers, venture back into the decaying halls of a city forgotten.
But...many years have passed...and now something far more deadly than any Big Daddy lurks around every corner.

I think working a story line for 6 games would be awesome and would not be too hard to pull off. Thing to remember is not all games have to be on the same platform and not all games have to be a direct sequel or prequel. They can be set with different perspectives for the same story line giving insight into why a character did what they did or for situations that were unknown to major character storylines revealed that had contributing influences on how the situation came to be. Look at the Silent Hill, Resident Evil or Final Fantasy franchises.
