Ask Joystiq Xbox: D-pad is de problem edition

Also, by the way, we're practically out of questions to answer. We refuse to believe that we've answered them all. Sure, we're probably getting close, but not that close. If you have burning (Xbox-related) questions, send 'em to the email address below.
Got a question for Ask Joystiq Xbox? Maybe you have a story or some information you'd like to share? Send it all to ask [att] xbox360fanboy [dawt] com.
Hey guys. I had a couple questions regarding the 360 that I hope you can answer for me...
1. After I got my 360 repaired(they sent me back the same one, not a refurb) Microsoft gave me a 1 year warranty that covers anything(separate from the 3 year rrod one). When did they start doing this? When I sent my first one in in 2007 they sent me back a refurbished 360 and I did not get a 1 year warranty.
2. Can you recommend some good 360 games to play with a younger sibling? My brother is 8 years old and I'd like to find some games that I could play with him. I'm thinking about Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise because A. It's only $30, and B. It's supposed to be friendlier to newcomers than the original. Is that true? Does it teach you how to play the game better than the original?
Thanks! Btw, I love the podcast even though Chris Grant keeps telling me that it'll give me ear cancer!
1) We're not sure when Microsoft started offering a one year warranty with refurbished or repaired Xbox consoles. For that matter, it's possible Microsoft has always done that. Thus far, we haven't had to pay for any Xbox repairs at all (we've been through plenty of 'em around here). Our advice, don't look a gift horse in the mouth, even if that same horse is responsible for your 360 breaking in the first place.
2) Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise is a good pick. Our own Dustin Burg advises that it isn't necessarily easier to get into than the first, but says that co-op play allows more experienced players to help less experienced players. That sounds pretty much perfect for you and your brother, no? Also, there are lots of great Xbox Live Arcade games you could play with him. Arcade co-op classics like Contra or Golden Axe come to mind, for example. Though it's a bit more complicated, Worms is a lot of fun too. Feel free to leave some suggestions in the comments, folks!
Don't listen to that Chris Grant either. He's a huckster and a liar, a man who will do anything to hock his cheap wares.
I switched to an HDMI connection and now my controllers won't charge when my system is off and when i turn it back on it tells me my controller is charged all the way even though it is out of juice. What up wit dat?
That's very strange. We also have no idea how to help you here. Have you tried switching to a different video connection like VGA or component? It's hard to imagine that changing your A/V connection would affect controller charging. You might double check to make sure the connection is securely connected. Other than that, we're stumped. Anyone out there have a suggestion?
Hello
After reading your ask joystick xbox post on the 17th Feb about Xbox Live and credit cards i like to point people to http://billing.microsoft.com log on with you Microsoft Live account that has you gamertag attached (also please type this URL into the bar for security reasons)
at this site you can remove/add credit cards from the xbox live service reassign things like XNA creators club & xbox live to a different credit card
also it will tell you how to cancel your account, track every items that you have spend Microsoft point thought out Microsoft services like Zune & Xbox Marketplace for the last 12 months
tell you when account expire
its not the most well lay out site to use but it works and you don't have to spend all day on the dam phone

Thanks, Josh, for the tip. Just as a friendly courtesy, allow us to suggest that you spend a little more time proofreading your next email (apologies if English isn't your first language). For those of you out there having trouble removing your credit card from Xbox Live, try billing.microsoft.com (log in with the Live ID connected to your Gamertag) and see if it works. Let us know how you fared in the comments. For the record, we were unable to find any option to remove a credit card at the site, though we could edit credit card information.
Everyone knows that Halo ODST will include all of the Halo 3 multiplayer maps, but will it have its own multiplayer. In other words, will I have to insert my Halo 3 disk to play the exclusive ODST maps?
Thanks in advance,
---
bioadam
Nope. ODST multiplayer is Halo 3 multiplayer. Also, there are no exclusive maps for Halo 3: ODST. The game will include all the maps released thus far as well as the maps in the upcoming Mythic Map Pack. Multiplayer will be exactly the same as Halo 3, so you have nothing to worry about.
Update: It looks like ODST does have three exclusive maps. Still, you won't need your Halo 3 disc to play them. We'll have to wait and see whether or not Microsoft decides to sell the maps on Marketplace for those who don't buy ODST.
Hi Guys,
Sad to see you lost your fanboy-ness and went corporate on us (I kid, I kid). Just a quick question, what ever happened to those new green controllers with the supposedly improved D-pad? Were those ever released? Will we ever get any lovin on the US side? Ok that that was more than one question, but you get the idea. Thanks guys, keep up the good work!

As far as we know, the green Xbox 360 controllers were only released in Europe, Asia and Latin America. As we originally reported, the controllers -- revised D-pad and all -- were only intended as a limited release in the aforementioned regions. For whatever reason, Microsoft still hasn't fixed the D-pad in the standard controller. Maybe they'll get it right in time for the Xbox 720.
Hi.
I was wondering if there were any rumors or announcements of playing your XBLA games on some portable device. I know MS said it wouldn't really be pursuing a portable gaming system, but would it maybe bring this functionality to the Zune? I think I'd buy a lot more XBLA titles if I had more options to play them.
I may be mistaken, but I think the PSP and PS3 have this functionality.
Thanks.
Daniel.
No, there haven't been any announcements of XBLA compatibility with portable devices. Microsoft did post a job listing recently asking for someone to create a Zune Xbox application, though exactly what the application would do remains a mystery. We've certainly theorized with our fellow bloggers about transfering XBLA games to a portable device before.
We're guessing it's more complicated than it sounds, especially considering all XBLA on the market were designed for the Xbox 360. We're no experts, but we're guessing the hardware specs for the Zune and Xbox 360 are pretty different. That said, Microsoft is developing XNA projects on the Zune, so it's possible that some sort of Xbox interoperability might be in the cards. Who knows, maybe we'll hear something at E3.
That's it for this week, folks. Keep sending your questions to: ask [att] xbox360fanboy [dawt] com.

I had read that the only difference in the new dpad is the number of connections and that only games designed with it in mind could benefit from it. I don't know how true it is, but if they were that phenominal you'd think we'd hear more about it.
I'd just say everyone should go out and buy the new street fighter iv pads. They're great for games that need a good dpad.
joeybeast @ Feb 24th 2009 4:36PM
Good luck finding the fightpad.
sleepydumbdude @ Feb 24th 2009 5:25PM
I have one they aren't worth it imo. They seem cheaply made and while its working great for me now I have a feeling it will give to regular wear and tear play much sooner than most other controllers.
Deone @ Feb 25th 2009 12:58AM
S-Kill says they rock. And he wouldn't lie. never
Haohmaru @ Feb 25th 2009 12:24PM
The fight pad's d-pad is stellar, if you can find one reasonably priced. I was lucky enough to get one from Best Buy before they sold out online, but your best option at this point is to try to find one in a small-town GameStop or something.
Kira Blaize @ Feb 25th 2009 2:07PM
Or, instead of dropping money on a brand new controller for SFIV, you could instead use the analog stick. I have, and it works just fine. I have no problems whatsoever in SFIV.
Yeah, the D-pad sucks, but the fightpads aren't really worth the price.
Ghen @ Feb 27th 2009 7:09AM
I like using the joystick on the regular controller for charging characters... So maybe its time for a change from Ken and Sagat eh?
I guess I'll work on my balrog until fightpads become available again.
And to the previous commenter who questioned the quality.. You said its working great for you, but not to buy it because it -might- break? Don't jump to conclusions. We'll know by the time the second release comes out if the first start breaking or not.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Feb 24th 2009 4:10PM
I've been trying to get some of my cards off of my Xbox account forever now.. I've gone to the billing.microsoft site before, but all it lets me do is view & edit the current cards, there isn't anything to actually remove them.
josh @ Feb 24th 2009 6:33PM
put in McCain credit card instead. lol.. of put in a fake one.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Feb 24th 2009 6:42PM
lol I tried that before.. it just renders the card useless.. which is fine, but I want them physically taken off the site and when I look at them on the marketplace and whatnot.
iFester @ Feb 24th 2009 8:30PM
Try this:
1. Go to Xbox.com
2. Sign in with the gamertag that's attached to your credit card
3. Click on Marketplace.
4. On the My Account drop down menu, go to Manage Payment Options.
5. Next to your credit card number there should be an Edit/Remove option.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Feb 24th 2009 8:47PM
@ iFester
Oh Shi- that actually worked! This should remove it from being seen from the actual marketplace when i'm on my Xbox as well I assume?? One thousand thanks!
pat @ Feb 24th 2009 4:12PM
i don't know why but i have had no problem when it comes to using the d pad i use it exclusively when playing street fighter. I know i am in the minority in this it must be because i learned how to street fighter on a genesis which had a similar controller.
well just my 2 cents
ugotamesij @ Feb 24th 2009 4:18PM
I actually had to remove an expired credit card's details this weekend. I searched online as for how to do it (I wrongly assumed you could do it via the 360 itself) and saw someone else mention the billing.microsoft.com link - I logged in and removed the old details within 30 seconds.
I'm based in the UK though, so not sure if it's (currently) location-based...
Alex @ Feb 24th 2009 5:32PM
How do i do it?
I go into edit and the only option there is by adding a new card...
Lieutenant @ Feb 24th 2009 6:18PM
I'd appreciate it if you could point me to where I need to go at billing.microsoft.com to remove cards. I can't find anything for the life of me.
Stupendous52 @ Feb 24th 2009 4:17PM
Awesome, finally got that old credit card off of my Xbox. Thanks X3F!
MadamTampini @ Feb 24th 2009 4:21PM
@pat
Actually a lot of people learned to play games like that on older consoles lol I played Street Fighter on SNES :) The d-pad is royally pwnt on almost all my controllers (I have 4), the only controller it seems to work on is my red one.
MadamTampini @ Feb 24th 2009 4:21PM
Oh I forgot about the reply button lol :(
pat @ Feb 24th 2009 4:25PM
I guess Ive been lucky with my controllers lol. I guess ill do well until people get their fightsticks
Peff @ Feb 24th 2009 4:22PM
that new site for the billing didnt help anything. i still couldnt remove my card.
axis3100 @ Feb 24th 2009 4:22PM
What you said about Halo 3: ODST not having any exclusive maps contradicts what was said in this article.
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/07/halo-3-odst-will-ship-with-all-24-of-halo-3s-multiplayer-maps/
So which one is true?
Richard Mitchell @ Feb 25th 2009 12:15PM
Oops, you're right. There will be exclusive maps in ODST. Still, you won't need a Halo 3 disc to play them.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Feb 24th 2009 4:27PM
How exactly did you do it?? Is there a button or something that lets you?? All I can do is edit it, I don't see anything that mentions removing it.
DeadPlasmaCell @ Feb 24th 2009 4:29PM
@ Stupendous52
The Dom @ Feb 24th 2009 4:34PM
Wait a minute. ODST ships with all the Halo 3 maps? So if I dont buy the Legendary and Mythic packs (I dont like paying for maps) I'll get them when I get ODST?
Steven @ Feb 24th 2009 4:39PM
To remove your CC:
Payment method (select CC you want to remove) -> goto payment method information -> use different payment method
Peff @ Feb 24th 2009 4:59PM
that doesnt remove it completely, just changes from card to card, i want it removed completely
Steven @ Feb 24th 2009 5:10PM
From their help:
Removed
The payment method has been removed from your account and the payment method is listed for historical purposes.
It doesn't look like there is a way to make it disappear.
Jordan @ Feb 24th 2009 7:31PM
Oh thank you!!! You are a wonderful and beautiful person! I've been trying to find this for soooo long.
Edge @ Feb 24th 2009 5:14PM
If you want to fix the d-pad, go to Extreme-Mods.com or another store and buy one of the XCM controller cases labeled as having a "new" d-pad. After moving the innards into the new case, I found the d-pad responded with a sharp click. I have never had another problem with it.
As a plus, if you can manage a little soldering, you can make your buttons light up. It's really a worthwhile, low risk mod, even for a beginner.
PSN: Erdie (Now equipped with 360!) @ Feb 24th 2009 8:49PM
I may have to do that. This d-pad is driving me crazy.
Jonman @ Feb 24th 2009 6:05PM
I just removed a card from my account on xbox.com yesterday. If memory serves, it was buried in the Manage Profile stufff.
Lieutenant @ Feb 24th 2009 6:43PM
Wow, thanks a lot. I was busy fiddling around with that billing microsoft site and found it right away on Xbox.com
The link is: https://live.xbox.com/en-US/Flows/EditCreditCard/SelectPaymentInstrument.aspx
There's a Edit and a Remove to the right of the cards.
Lieutenant @ Feb 24th 2009 6:44PM
Bleh, nevermind. It won't remove the card that's selected. Everything else is fair game.
Fucking ridiculous how many hoops you have to jump through just to remove a credit card.
Bootleg Zani @ Feb 25th 2009 4:12PM
Replying to Lieutenant
This method worked fine for me. I was able to remove all my cards.
Bootleg Zani @ Feb 25th 2009 4:14PM
Replying to Lieutenant
Meaning I was able to remove my CCs using your Xbox.com method.
karolski84 @ Feb 24th 2009 6:09PM
So Halo:ODST is SinglePlayer - Only? And there will bei no "You have no shield an cannot jump that high"-Mode in Halo3/ODST?
Musicman247 @ Feb 24th 2009 6:28PM
Interesting that you say you have no more questions to answer, even though you have not addressed the question I posed over a month ago in numerous emails.
What is up with the Mobile Joystiq[Xbox] site? Why don't all of the articles show up there? When will it be fixed? I love reading you guys while on the go, but only getting one or two of the new stories (cross-posted stories do not show up on the mobile Joystiq[Xbox] site) stinks!
Mr Pimpbot @ Feb 24th 2009 8:26PM
To the guy having problems charging the controller when using HDMI:
I think I know what your problem is. My setup has HDMI from the 360 going to a receiver and then to my TV. If I turn on the 360 before switching the receiver to the correct input, the 360 never boots up and just sits idle. I have seen a 360 hooked up over HDMI directly to the same TV as mine and it starts up right away even if it is not on the right input. I have had similar setups using component and have never seen this happen.
I surmise that a 360 hooked up with HDMI to a device that is not actively communicating with it (i.e. the having the 360 plugged into a receiver that is set to the wrong input is no different than having it unplugged whereas the TV detects the signal regardless of input selected) believes itself to be disconnected and hence does not bother powering the USB. I am willing to bet if you switched to component (I wouldn't want to do it either) or run the 360 straight to the TV (but how am I gonna get my Dolby 5.1?!) you will be stuck with the problem.
My advice, buy a quick charge kit.
dave @ Feb 24th 2009 8:41PM
The Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (Sega Mega Drive: Ultimate Collection outside the US) has some great 2 player games and it's only $28 (£25 in the UK) on amazon
PSN: Erdie (Now equipped with 360!) @ Feb 24th 2009 8:42PM
The lousy d-pad was the first (okay, second) thing that annoyed me about my shiny new 360. I figured people were just exaggerating. No, no they were not.
As for the first thing that annoyed me, that would be the system noise. I was already in shock when I turned it on, then I stuck a disc in...Yowza. Nice engineering, guys.
Oh well, I'll get used to it eventually.
nalidz @ Feb 24th 2009 8:53PM
The official xbox magazine says that ODST has all current map packs plus mythic and 3 exclusive maps that only com on disk...There six total ones unreleased
Deck @ Feb 25th 2009 1:15AM
For game suggestions I would suggest Kung Fu Panda. I don't know what any co-op option is for it as I don't have it myself.. but it is supposed to be kid friendly I hear and would probably be fun for him.
gjgbarclay @ Feb 25th 2009 7:20AM
Gotta register to back up nalidz here. ODST will have 3 exclusive maps, on bungie.net, but I heard about it first here, on joystiq...

I have a controller with the revised dpad, it is better - but it still is horrible.
This is one of those mistakes where i don't even know how they thought keeping it on the controller was a good idea like the shape of the PS3's triggers that make no logical sense at all.
Bootleg Zani @ Feb 25th 2009 3:58PM
I've already tried to use that site before to remove CCs. It didn't work before and when I logged in this time thinking they changed something I still couldn't locate a way to remove cards. Apparently you can delete them off your console now at least.
abominablecookie @ Feb 27th 2009 2:13PM
I (being European) managed to nab myself one of the green pads along with the limted edition green play and charge kits. And honestly, i haven't noticed a thing... There is certainly no major difference between it and my standard white one... Except of course that it looks ten times more badass.
