Bungie: Don't expect to see Master Chief in ODST
Given that Halo 3: ODST takes place directly after the Prophet of Regret bugs out of New Mombasa, it's not too surprising to learn that Master Chief won't be appearing in the game. See, everyone knows that the UNSC In Amber Clad -- carrying Master Chief -- jumped into the same slipspace rupture used by Regret. Duh.
Still, if you were sternly hoping that John 117 might make some kind of cameo, those hopes have now been officially quashed by Bungie's Brian Jarrard. Speaking to Multiplayer, Jarrard stated the totally obvious, "Master Chief, at the time this game takes place, is actually off on other parts of the galaxy." Jarrard elaborated, "In this game, it's all about you playing the role of an ODST," adding, "The way the timelines work in this game, Master Chief is off doing something else."
So there you have it, the only place to find Master Chief while playing ODST is where he can always be found: Our hearts.

as much as i agree with them not putting master chief in ODST. imagine how cool it would be to fight along side him and seeing how much he kicks ass.

It would be badass if you see the Chief running around tearing the Covenant to shreds!

Then you'd just sit by as he did everything...where is the fun in that? Although it would be an interesting concept where for once you aren't the super soldier

well what if they relied on you to support him/her? im sure they could find a lot of ways to do it. plus it would give you something to look up to. you could marvel in their ability and if you saved them from death it would do wonders for you. i dono im just thinking it would be awesome

The real question is will he make an appearance in reach ie will the game encompass any of first strike as well as the fall of reach?

While I we can't say for sure he (John) will or wont make an appearance in Halo: Reach, it will encompass the fall of Reach (Halo: Reach falls spring 2010). I'll bet part way through (maybe the middle) you'll be tasked with getting off Reach alive (and maybe as many survivors as you can).

well. John was there at the very start, but he wasnt planetside, he was on a space dock retrieving nav data from an ONI prowler so the covenant didnt find earth, then once he got it he got on the PoA and off to Halo. During First Strike however, he and the survivors of Halo went to reach, rescued the remaining Spartans and Dr. Halsey, and went to the Covenant station Unyielding Hierophant, destroyed it, Linda died, they all go to Earth and Halo 2 happens. Considering that master chief is only at Reach for the beginning and very end, I doubt we'll play as him, but I'm almost positive we'll at least see or hear him

I'm glad they are expanding the Halo universe and showing us different battles and characters.

i was fully expecting one of the flashbacks to show the chief dual weilding some guns, jumping from a scarab, jacking a banshee, crashing, jumping out throwing a grenade in a crowd of grunts. but thats my memory of some of halo 2.

I think we will see Master Chief in ODST; not as an NPC, but perhaps posters of him or even a graffiti design akin to the "Remember Reach" slogan found in the E3 demonstrations. I'm sure Bungie will have at least some easter eggs in the game.

They say we shouldn't expect him, then BAM! there he is. It's just a ruse.

I'm happy about them exploring other aspects of Halo as well. Halo has never been mainly about graphics.. but more about game play and fun. I love the whole franchise.. but I hope they work on a new graphics engine for Reach. It'd be interesting to view the Halo universe with a fresh coat of paint on the 360. In any case.. I'm really looking forward to a lot more Halo and MW.

That's too bad, I was hoping at the end of the game you would see Chief hurdling towards the ground, thus showing what happened in his absence from Halo 2 to Halo 3.
CDN Crockett @ Jun 15th 2009 9:57PM
Not even in a cut scene?? Brutal!
jam @ Jun 16th 2009 12:59AM
maybe next time.... IN REACH!!!!
