Killjoy: Guy goes to NYC public library to play Halo 3, gets busted

Nothing to us seems more right than sitting down in a comfy chair, in front of an HD monitor, and getting some Halo 3 on. And that's exactly what the fine gentleman above did at a New York public library recently, borrowing the free Wi-Fi for a little Xbox Live.
According to Flickr user 'dynatrite' who snapped this picture with his iPhone, the whole schebang took "20 minutes to set up" and "2 minutes to get [him] kicked out." We're not exactly shocked, considering the reported items include "a monitor, Xbox [360], Wi-Fi router, external HD, earphones with mouthpiece, and a controller" -- that last, crucial piece being hidden below a copy of the New York Post. We can't help but wonder if somewhere in that library, if you listened carefully enough, a faint "Killjoy!" could be heard when he was caught. Maybe, just maybe.

Hmm something feels odd about this too me. I guess free wifi at a library is "supposed" to be for studying but we all know people use it for far more, so its kind of silly they kick somebody out who just wants to play some halo. I'd imagine if they guy is being loud that would make a difference.
In the end.. he should be smarter by setting up shop on a park bench across the street whilst building himself a directed wifi antenna to just connect to the wifi from the outside......

You know that's what anyone within the signals radius is doing anyway...Just leeching off the library's connection.
Dragod @ Aug 27th 2009 3:48PM
I read another post of this story yesterday... Apparently, he was talking to hist teammates, too.. I'd imagine that's what got him kicked out. If he had been quiet, and had set up in a far away corner, I don't think anyone would have minded.
Dragod @ Aug 27th 2009 3:50PM
He proceeded to play Quake/Halo/Call of Duty...some nerd fighter game while yelling out instructions to his "teammates".
>>while yelling out instructions to his "teammates".
See? If he hadn't been yelling, I'm sure it would have been fine.

so THAT'S the dude that glitched on me!
Doug @ Aug 27th 2009 4:06PM
Let's be real. The dude deserved to be kicked out--or at least told to disconnect the system. No need to get "up in arms" by a doofus who sets up an xbox (with a headset) in a library. LOL.
mycbrad @ Aug 27th 2009 4:10PM
I'd rather it be him than a horde of 8 year old teabaggers.
JeffyWeffyBeffy @ Aug 27th 2009 4:09PM
Yeah I'm sure he could have gotten away with it, tucked away in a corner or some thing, like dragod said.
But goodness, can people be pricks. You're actually gonna start talking to your teammates about some BS game, when other people are studying, surfing, LEARNING. Sorry, I love people, but have no patience for people like this. What a D bag.
What a production too, to bring all that stuff with you, and to even hide the controller under a newspaper, for a couple minutes of playing a video game. All for such a monotonous game too!!!! Lame. Just keep it at home, fork out some cash for your own internet.

Hahahahahaha they should've leached from starbucks!

I can't say I agree with what this guy was doing. At least he wasn't browsing pr0n or something.
I have to think the bandwidth suffered for the other patrons while he was on..
Minecart @ Aug 27th 2009 6:07PM
Are you kidding? Major public and university libraries these almost always have incredible network bandwidth - I've tested the wireless network on my campus and public libraries and have gotten speeds 10-20 times what my at-home high-speed can perform at, and I have a pretty decent 10Mbps connection. So if I can play XBL at home and my girlfriend doesn't notice any slowdown on our internet, you bet this one guy could play Halo and not effect other user's latency. Maybe if he was also downloading a crapload of torrents. Not that I think it is a great idea to bring your xbox to the library, unless they're hosting a tournament. Haha maybe he just got the date wrong?

Down here in Colorado our Librarys have "Teen Zones" with 6 Dell XPS's, a 360, Wii, PS3, Projector, and tons of big screen TV's.
Emblazin @ Aug 27th 2009 11:16PM
Up there they don't.
Benny @ Aug 27th 2009 8:15PM
Why did he have an external hard drive?
victorinvictus @ Aug 29th 2009 12:23PM
I would guess it had music on it.
Roto13 @ Aug 27th 2009 11:08PM
Last time I was at the library, I saw a dude looking at camwhore pics on facebook. But at least that guy was being quiet.
cody @ Aug 27th 2009 11:24PM
Well yeah, other wise he wouldn't have done that.
MRLN the Amazing @ Aug 28th 2009 4:48PM
I used to play Halo off a flash drive at my library, but a headset is kinda overkill (actually, bringing the Xbox, hard drive, and the big monitor ANYWHERE is overkill). You need to be sneakier than that!
