List of the most played Live games of 2008

Just in case you weren't keeping (weekly) track of the most played games of 2008, our pal Major Nelson thought he'd do the community a service by listing the Top 20 Live Games of 2008, based on Live connectivity over the course of the past 52 weeks. We copied 2008's top five 360 games below, because we can, but you can view a listing of 2008's twenty most played games after the jump. For those who are interested in XBLA and original Xbox 2008 stats, Major posted those as well. Congrats to Halo 3, Castle Crashers and Halo 2 for being so darn popular.

World at War back on top in the UK
It seems like the United Kingdom just can't get enough of Call of Duty: World at War, as the game is at the top of the all platforms chart once again. Need for Speed Undercover sits at number 2 despite some mixed reviews. FIFA 09, unsurprisingly, is performing well and is the regions third best selling title. Tomb Raider: Underworld is also maintaining strong sales, jumping from number 9 to number 7 since last week. Sadly, other titles, most notably Left 4 Dead don't seem to be performing terribly well in the UK, with the co-op zombie shooter falling all the way down to 34. Finally, if, like us, you've been on pins and needles wondering how Sonic's latest outing has fared in the UK, you should know that Sonic Unleashed failed to crack the top 40 on the multi-platform chart. It did, however, manage to land at number 23 on the Xbox specific chart.
'Unusual' World at War DLC scheduled for early '09
Call of Duty: World at War fans have a reason to be excited for New Years, because Activision has some "unusual" downloadable content in the works and has plans to release 2-3 DLC packs during World at War's lifespan.Talking with MTV Multiplayer, WaW executive producer Daniel Suarez mentioned that their upcoming DLC is "not going to be what we've done traditionally" and will exceed what CoD4 offered in terms of new content. No specific release plans were given and the unusual DLC will remain a mystery. New maps, new modes, new weapons, more single player? We're not sure, but "unusual" DLC is much more exciting than "traditional" DLC.
World at War double XP weekend for collector's edition owners

We just received intel that there will be a week of Call of Duty: World at War double XP beginning December 5th, but that it's semi-exclusive. Only World at War collector's edition purchasers will have access to the XP fun. Those who registered their World at War CE copy (register it here) will have access to a special "Officer's Club" playlist that'll award twice the XP and (hopefully) twice the fun. Remember, the week of two-times XP begins December 5th and wraps at 11:59AM pacific on Friday, December 12th. At ease, soldier.
COD: World at War #1 in UK, outsells COD4 2 to 1
GI.biz reports that first week sales of Call of Duty: World at War in the UK have exceeded first week sales of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare by a margin of more than 2 to 1. The game landed in the number one spot in the UK for all platforms according to Chart-Track. Considering the previous installment sold over 10 million copies, it's not too surprising that the latest has managed to pick up significant sales. Another thing that isn't too surprising (though perhaps a little alarming) is that Activision published games make up more than 25% of all game sales in the UK last week (thanks in no small part to the Lich King). The next step: Activision acquires a little start-up named Cyberdyne Systems. You know the rest.

Infinity Ward goes off on Activision for 'bullshit quotes'
Well this was unexpected. Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling, known as fourzerotwo, recently posted some choice words about Activision producer Noah Heller. Specifically, Bowling asks Heller to "stop doing interviews," saying that he needs to stop comparing Call of Duty: World at War to Call of Duty 4 and that the game can "stand on it's [sic] own merits." Bowling then cites a "bullshit quote" from a recent CVG interview in which Heller states that previous Call of Duty titles required several shots with bolt action rifles to make a kill and says that Treyarch has corrected this in World at War. Responded Bowling: "WTF are you talking about?! ... First of all, you didn't work on 'previous Call of Dutys', so don't talk as if you're down with how / why things were designed the way they were. Second, you're completely fucking wrong."
Bowling concludes that World at War has many good features and that Activision would be better off promoting them instead of comparing the game to previous titles. He notes that the media should interview someone from Treyarch that "knows what the fuck they're talking about" and not "Senior Super Douche Noah Heller from Activision - who apparently has never played the game and doesn't even work at the developer." Yowch. Soap operas aren't this good.

Video: Zombies at War, first footage of the new World at War mode
A few days ago Treyarch announced a special mode included in Call of Duty: World at War that unlocks once the game has been completed. Dubbed the Nazi Zombie co-op mode, the additional feature pits gamers against hordes of zombies armed with World War II era weaponry. Cue your best, "World Exclusive" voice-over and watch the first footage of the mode above. We're conflicted about the mode though because while it looks cool it does seem a little silly to have something so historically innacurate in a World War II game -- flamethrowers don't traditionally carry that much ammo. Someone at the Treyarch research desk totally needs to be talked to about this.
Call of Duty: World at War includes Nazi Zombie Mode
Looks like Treyarch has taken a cue from Valve's upcoming Left 4 Dead and the world's love of zombie action. Developer Treyarch has revealed that Call of Duty: World at War will include a Nazi Zombie Mode, in the latest edition of GameTrailers TV. Once the single player campaign has been completed players will gain access to the mode which sends waves of Nazi Zombie adversaries in the players direction.
The mode sports an economy system which allows players to purchase new weapons and rebuild barricades to slow down the zombie rush. How crazy does it get? According to Treyarch the team got to the 23rd wave before becoming overwhelmed by the zombie horde. Now that is a cool little extra.
