Game of the Year 2008 - Left 4 Dead

Yes, there are only four levels and there are only a handful of weapons. That said, grabbing three buddies and taking on the undead hordes of the zombie apocalypse is the most fun I've had with a game this year, hands down. More than anything else, Left 4 Dead is a game of moments. Every L4D play session spawns dozens of memorable moments that get talked about after the game.

One moment, everything is fine. The next, you get reeled in by a Smoker, vomited on by a Boomer, and eviscerated by a Witch. Surprisingly enough, it's exactly when things go horribly wrong that Left 4 Dead is at its best.

And let's not forget the versus mode, in which you get to play as the zombies and make things go wrong for the humans. Left 4 Dead, quite simply, is co-op gaming at its finest.
