WRUP: PAX East is next week edition

Why are we so excited for PAX East? Well, it's a chance for us to let our hair down -- well, those of us who have hair that's long enough, or even still have hair ... let's start over. PAX East's apparent size for its inaugural year came as a relative surprise to many companies, so the formal meetings we'd usually have are out and a more "let's see how this goes" attitude is in effect. Meaning, we get to actually hang out.

Of course, we still have some meetings (i.e. work), but then we also have some fun stuff planned, like the Blueberry Muffin Top breakfast and live Joystiq podcast recording. However, for the most part, we'll be wandering around looking for interesting stuff. Play some games, geek out, probably grab a couple pints and nachos at The Pour House -- oooo, or maybe Bukowski's, which is one of the last dive bars left in the city. Anyway, follow our Twitters (noted after the break) and we'll be sure to holla stuff to check out in and around the show.

WRUP: Gee-Dee-See you at PAX East edition

March is packed! Great game releases, with plenty of industry announcements and kerfuffles going on. With that said, if you missed any of our Game Developers Conference 2010 coverage this week, be sure to check it out -- a lot happened. We'll also be adding some more GDC coverage over the weekend. Once that's put to bed, we have about two weeks and then it's on to PAX East, the inaugural edition of the consumer conference.

We have plenty planned for PAX East, including the Blueberry Muffin Top breakfast and live Joystiq podcast recording. With half our staff just "hanging out" for once, we'll be looking for cool stuff to do just like everyone else. Be sure to follow our Twitters (noted after the break), we'll be sure to note if cool stuff is going on.

WRUP: GDC incoming, Battlefield veterans left behind edition

Next week is the 2010 Game Developers Conference in the fierce city of San Francisco. A lot is expected to be announced and discussed at the show, however there are sure to be a few surprises. Joystiq will have plenty of boots comfortable footwear on the ground covering the show.

Meanwhile, in what boils down to a horrible coincidence, those of us caught in the grips of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 multiplayer addiction are being left behind to take care of this little website. Not going to lie: We simply can't be trusted to not take 20 minute breaks every hour.

WRUP: Fight for the lost days of February edition

Before The Collectors ever took humans, they took our days! In a WORLD EXCLUSIVE reveal, we can tell you that Mass Effect 3's plot revolves around Commander Shepard retrieving every missing 31st day of the calendar year. For February, however, it's a personal mission for the month's missing three days (don't tell us you've never noticed). The only reason it gains the 29th day back every four years is an insidious rip in the space-time continuum devised by The Reapers. Next time, Shepard isn't just fighting for humanity, he's fighting for time itself.

WRUP: Getting DICEy edition

With our intrepid reporter Alexander Sliwinski off at DICE in Las Vegas this week, the reins of WRUP have been temporarily handed over -- don't worry, we'll be gentle. That said, we're wondering what the most exciting news to come out of this week's event was for you, dearest reader. Perhaps Richard Garriott's surprisingly speedy re-entry into the world of game development? How about Bobby Kotick's admission that he wishes he had "looked in Harmonix's direction" before buying up RedOctane? We're quite partial to the AIAS agreeing with our favorite game of 2009. Let's ruminate on this while discussing what everyone's playing this weekend, shall we?

WRUP: Play with someone you love edition

Ah, Valentine's Day, a celebration of obligation and over-priced prix fixe menus at restaurants. If you're lucky, you can spend some time on the couch with someone you love and play some of these offline co-op games:
  • 'Splosion Man
  • House of the Dead: Overkill (Critics called it "f*@king good." Other critics called it "motherf*@king good.")
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Halo 3: ODST
  • Resident Evil 5
  • Borderlands
  • Fable II
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  • Left 4 Dead 2
Got some more recommendations? Drop them after the break. What's everyone playing this weekend?

WRUP: Joystiq's big PAX East Saturday plans edition

This is a time-sensitive reminder that Joystiq will be hosting a Blueberry Muffin Tops breakfast at PAX East, which will have many of your favorite 'stiq editors in attendance. Normally, we wouldn't mention this until we're closer to the event date of Saturday, March 27, but with the current state of ticket sales for the convention, we'd like to remind anyone who'd really like to attend that getting a Saturday ticket is essential. Also, the Joystiq Podcast will record live at the show that evening and, frankly, who knows what else we'll plan between now and then. So, yeah, Saturday is kinda big.

WRUP: BioWare-ing us out edition

Did you enjoy the launch trailer for Mass Effect 2 last week on WRUP? No?! Well, here it is again and again. It appears that our entire staff is in the grips of BioWare addiction, playing one RPG or another from the developer -- except for JC, who is probably "keepin' it real" with some Japanese import. So, what's everyone playing this post-Mass Effect 2 release weekend?

WRUP: Mass Effect 2 is almost here edition

Go ahead and watch the launch trailer for Mass Effect 2 again, then be a total hater and pretend you don't want to play it. It's cool, we'll totally nod and smile. If that's not enough, go ahead and watch the six other trailers again and again. If someone knows how to speed up time and make us skip to next week, we'd totally appreciate it. What's everyone playing this pre-Mass Effect 2 weekend?

WRUP: 'Shift it, shift it all!' edition

Even as Splinter Cell: Conviction (and, well, RUSE, but whatever) moved out of Q1 this week, we are still faced with one of the most packed high-profile first half of the year release schedules we've ever seen. We're not kidding ourselves, there's going to be a lot more shifting this year, because we still haven't gotten around to hearing about all the unannounced stuff! All we know is if Mass Effect 2 gets delayed in the eleventh hour ... no joke, someone is getting blown out an airlock. What's everyone playing this weekend?

WRUP: A decade of games edition

Today's WRUP is all about asking: what were three games you really enjoyed playing this past decade. They don't have to be "the best," heck, most people don't even have to like them. So, as you're letting us know what you're playing this weekend, we're curious to hear the three games you enjoyed during the years 2000-2009? We've also listed ours after the break.

Oh, as for the picture of The Sims, turns out it released January 31, 2000. It may not have been the first game to kick off the decade, but it's hard to argue it wasn't one of the most influential and successful. So, what's everyone playing this weekend?

WRUP: That's a decade edition

With the planet currently recovering, still partying or just getting started saying goodbye to the decade, let's not get nostalgic about the naughts just yet. Everyone's homework assignment for next week's WRUP -- yes, this includes Joystiq editors -- is to think about five games they enjoyed this past decade. The caveat is that the games don't have to be the best of the decade, so try not to get flustered coming up with the games that defined the last ten years. Just think about five games you enjoyed and you're done. This is supposed to be fun, so mull it over for a week and we'll come back to it.

So, what's everyone playing this weekend?

[Thanks, Patrick]

WRUP: All-inclusive edition

WRUP: Shout-out to downloadable games edition

Considering the high-profile Q4 2009 retail release schedule is going to go well into 2010, which then hurts the downloadable games market, let's talk downloadable games in this week's WRUP. Let us know the titles from WiiWare, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade or PC from 2009 that you think shouldn't be missed. What's everyone playing this weekend?

WRUP: 'Game of the Year' big fight edition

Here's a little nugget about the inner workings of Joystiq: This weekend we declare among the staff our top games of 2009 and our personal picks for "game of the year," also known as GOTY. Each Joystiq member submits their nominations and then through math that's way above my head, we end up with the list. In all probability, there's going to be a big fight this year -- a really big fight! This is also why we don't share an office with each other, because some of us aren't afraid to a cut a ... well, you get the idea. What are you playing this weekend and what games do you think we should consider?
